Wheels/tires

I have an opportunity to buy 4 chrome wheels off an 03 Mach 1 kinda cheap. Just a hike for me from Pittsburgh. They are the Mach 1 wheels. Guy says they are all 17x9. What size tires should I buy? He says they were 285 all around. Is that a good size or should (or can I) go a little bigger?

17x9 I wouldnt go any bigger than a 285, a 275 fits them perfect usually. They can run wider or narrower depending on brands too. Just check out tire rack or look up a tire size calculator on Goolgle. Im sure you could get away with a 295 on the rear on a 9 wide wheel. 285 seems a little wide to me for the fronts too, usually dont see them wider than a 275 due to rubbing.

I am dropped about 1.5 all around so 295 might be too wide right? So 275 or 285 is what you're saying?

Yeah 275 widest on front and you should be ok with that as long as your not doing too tall of a sidewall too. But a 275 40 17 should be fine up front, may get a touch of rubbing if at full lock but most dont unless they run a tire a little taller or wider than that. In the rear a 295 would be fine as far as the width, prob can go bigger but then it would look funny on your 9 wide wheel, it would bulge too much I think. So a 285 rear would be great or 295, and even a 245 up front as some are wide enough for the 9" wheels, and some a steteched a little. Myself I like the sidewalls straight up and down or even a little touch stretched vs having them buldge.

I don't know what your plans are with the car, but I just want to put this out there as a possible warning:
The wheels that came on the Mach I were polished aluminum alloy, looked like a modified Magnum 500 wheel, and I'm 95% sure they were 17"X8" (which would greatly effect the size tire you can put on there)
If these are 17"X9", and you don't mind replicas, this will also set you up nicely to later upgrade to 17"X10.5" deep dish, matching set from AFS wheels (which I find to be a really sick set-up for a car that sees the strip, tho I wouldn't advise getting such a big tire for a daily driver, rain doesn't like wide tires, much less mustangs with wide tires).

I was thinking the same about the stock Mach wheel size and also the chrome finish, but Im no Mach expert. But the replica ones from AFS are really nice when staggered even better.
