Port and Polish

The question I have about porting and polishing is in the third paragraph.

As most of you know, I am basically building a list of things to do with my 02 GT. I have a huge American Muscle wish list. At the moment funds are beyond tight, so I am trying to do as much as I can that is low cost, free, or by using donated parts I can modify or restore. )If anyone would like to offer me a job please know that I am looking.)

I have a friend with a full set of gaskets and head bolts for the 4.6 engine. All I need to do is pick up the parts. That made me think, with a set of gaskets I can pull the plenum and heads and have everything back together over the weekend.

My question; Is it worth my time and effort to pull the top end and do a port and polish job on the 4.6 two valve? The entire exhaust is stock from the manifolds to the exhaust tips. The intake is also stock with a K&N drop in (The factory intake breathes fine according to my research).

I have all of the tools and wheels. This should only cost me labor and new exhaust manifold studs (I always throw away exhaust studs to keep them from breaking).

You might gain 5 - 10 whp ... you might lose that too.

Trying to make any sort of decent NA power on a 2v is a waste of time.

I don't think I can screw up a port and polish job. I have done many, but this would be the first Ford. I really don't know how I could lose HP.

I would love to have a Mach 1. Dual overhead cams, 4v, and 305hp is a nice place to start with a New Edge. In don't have a Mach 1 though. All I have is my lowly GT with its puny SOHC 2v engine with 260hp.

Personally, I am beginning to like the 2v. Less moving parts and a great exhaust note, even with the stock exhaust. Power can be made with the engine, but it requires a lot of work and money. The engine simply does not breathe as well as it should or could. Forced induction is a long way off. In fact, I do not see a supercharger in this car's future. That said, I have to work with what I have.

I have little to no knowledge about Ford engines. If I can find 10hp with only a weekend of labor then I am all for it. At some point in time I will find or purchase an O/R catless midpipe. That should open things up a bit. Right now I am working with what I have.

I assume he is a member here? The name has been mentioned, but I don't know if I have seen many posts by him.

I will look him up. Thanks for the tip.

He has a thread titled "Where to go next." Lots of good info in that thread. He's built a legit drag car to say the least.

That's why the name is familiar.
