I have a 4.6 97 GT convertible and I have removed the cats.(not illegal here in NZ).I have now just the stock axle back mufflers. It sounds like a V8 now but loud. What can I add or change to reduce the volume but keep the V8 thunder?
Yes I think I will go with Flowmaster Super 44,s.It sounds mean without the cats.Lots of crackle and pop.Not sure whats in the stock mufflers, probably glasspack old school.
Original Flowmaster 40s sound awesome with an off road H pipe. This is set up I have on my 03 currently. It sounds good and clean. Classic "Mustang" sound! Deep and throaty at idle, sounds great without being too loud at cruising speeds and scream when WOT. I have an off road X pipe with Magnapacks on my 96 and its loud all over the place I still like it but prefer the H pipe and chambers now in my older age.

No I do not. I dont believe in them, JK. On both of mine Im off road= no cats. Check engine light kicks on unless you have MIL eliminators or a tune to trick the 02s. Ill be getting a tuner over the winter for the spring.

I had the 6 cats taken out and we just remounted the O2 sensors in the straight pipe blow the manifold and
had no check engine light issue. No re tune or computer tricking required. The O2 sensors don't really seem to care if the cats are there or not. This is on a 97 GT
my 96 has an offroad x with magnapack mufflers and it sounds awsome. loud not not insane at idle and low rpm but when it opens up it completely changes its tone and gets very loud
the offroad x with magnapacks has a nice idle and cruise sound that won't kill you but when it opens up it gets noisy. if you have your windows down and pass a car at WOT it sounds amazing. I think I want either slp loudmouths or dynomax bullets though
I loved mine with the cats on. Once the cats came off it was hands down one of the worst sounds I've ever heard. They very quickly got swapped for Flowmaster. Had I left the cats on the SLP Loudmouths would still be on the car.

They pop and rasp like crazy, no tone to the exhaust just noise! Sound reminds me of a semis jake brake...or a 1983 chevy truck with a half way blown out glasspack

Performance wise flowmasters are junk. However sound wise they are great.
I don't mean junk as in you'll lose power but for higher performance applications you'll want something more straight thru like SLP's, borla, magnapacks etc...
On the outside they didn t look that bad but inside they had a good amount of Rust
