4.6L V8 coolant/(pulley?) problems

I got a problem. the other day the large radiator to engine hose blew up and sprayed coolant all over the inside of my engine bay. My mustang is a 1999 GT and as far as i know everything was fine until the hose blew up for no reason. after i got a new hose and filled up the coolant tub with water, the radiator engine and all other parts that get heated started to smoke as the coolant was burning off. there was a high pitch squeaking or clanking noise when i press on the gas pedal. iv narrowed this problem down to a few things but i cant just be sure so i figure ill ask you guys. i cant directly tell if my engine is overheating because i think my thermostat might be broken and will only go halfway up, my check coolant light is on as well. when i started it up i noticed the water in my coolant tub was not being sucked down, almost like the engine is trying to suck water in but just cant. i had a friend who knows way more about muscle cars than me look at it and he couldn't figure it out but he did tell me that he could move the water/coolant bearing around and that isn't suppose to be good. my greatest fear however is that im going to need a new pulley because the noise i am hearing is coming from the bottom of my block. anyone have any useful tips/diagnosis they can share?

What? Ok so your water pump pulley is loose, that means you need a water pump. If your thermostat is stuck halfway open, you want to replace that too. I think you have to bleed the system.

I would start with attempting to get some of the coolant off your engine first. You should replace the t-stat if you think it's partly malfunctioning (though when mine went out I got a check engine light). They are pretty cheap, and very easy to replace. In fact, I wrote up an article on how to do this on this site. It'll be a lot cheaper than trying to do the water pump.

the squeeking is probably your idler pulley, shoot some oil on it and itll stop, happens all the time when coolant or water gets on it, the waterpump will have a little play front to back but should not move up or down, if it does then replace it....replace the thermostat period, when in doubt change it out...its too cheap, the 96-04 gts donot have a high point bleed like a cobra so the coolant talk is the highpoint, fill it with the engine running and up to temperature, your guage should be straight up and down.

if you hear a noise from the bottom, make sure your dampner is not bad and rubbing the timing cover, it is a strong possibility that it went bad.
