Are these normal 1/4 times?

Out of 7 runs, only 2 were in the 14's (one 14.500 @ 98.52 - the other 14.815 @95.28 ) both of those had 2.4 second 60'..

all the rest of my runs were between 15.1 and 15.3 (IE no more, no less) with between 2.3 and 2.6 second 60' - what am I doing wrong? since I hit 14.5 once.. it oughta be running okay - I have no clue what I did differently on that run aside from the fact it was my only race of the night vs an import..

I was shifting well IMO, and my launches seemed okay.. but what do I know? I went sideways twice on launch.. but the other ones had no audible wheelspin nor bog..

I was shifting between 5500 and 6k rpms each gear and holding third..

would modifying the car help get more consistent times? ... any ideas?

02 GT 5 speed..
thanks in advance

Do you have a shift light? Or how about a current dyno sheet? I'd bet that you were holding out too long on some of your shifts. Optimal shift points are right past the peak HP, so if you're peak hp is at 5200 rpms, I personally would dial my light to go off at 5000 rpms, because from my reaction time and the light coming on, it's more than likely you'd be past 5200 rpms then. When you hold on too long to a gear and you go past the peak hp and shift to the next gear, you're already starting close to the peak hp in the next gear. So, you're going from 6000rpms to approx. 4500rpms, and if your peak is at 5200rpms, then you've only got about 700rpms worth of hp for that gear. 3rd gear is the optimal gear to cross the finish line in, but if you need 4th, then go for it. So if I were you, I would get a dyno and a shift light to get a more frequent pattern when shifting. A shift light cost about $100 bucks and take less than an hour to install, and a dyno should run maybe about a $100 also. Then soon when you race at the track enough you can start learning to shift by the sound of the engine with out the shift light.

those times are pretty decent, on your launch, do you spin the tires, or do you bog? slip the clutch a lot?

describe how you launch

Yep, it's all about practice. On the mod motors you want to take the rpms as high as you can bring them or you lose some when you shift (rpms drop too low)

Practice does make perfect. With my gears I launch @ 4000 rpm's & it doesn't even peel out. It's alot of fun. Can't wait to get my 15 inch slicks,Cams & then launch @ 5500.

I was pulling 14.10's @ high 98 - mid 99 mph in my 2000 GT with just underdrive pulleys and K&N filter. I had crappy 60 ft's as well (1.9-2.3). I know it could have reached 14 flat or maybe even crack into the high 13.9s if I could have launched without so much wheel spin. I would typically go through the traps in 4th gear for my best times though. If I held 3rd, I would trap low 98 mph and only be around 14.3-14.5. I typically tried to shift around 5800 rpms or so.

I refuse to go back to the track in my Cobra. One time of embarrasment is enough for me. With nearly 3 second 60's, there is no way I will get that car even close to what it should be time wise. MPH was good (108-111 mph), but time was horrendous (13.8+ with even a 14.2 in there for good measure ) It was stock then, now will only be worse.

And then pray the rear end doesn't come apart on you. Is it stock other than the gears?

Sorry to go OT, and sorry to my friend ttpancakes cause I'm posting on his name. How do you 97Stallion have a 4.2 liter v6? Did the v6 car come with that in 97'? I ask because my dad has a 4.6 v8 and ttpancakes has the 3.9 liter and it's a v6. I've never heard of a 4.2 liter v6, did you do a swap?

All V6 based mustangs from 94-03 came with 3.8L engines, and in 04 the V6's are supposibly 3.9L. Also all F-150's and E-150's with a V6 came with 4.2L engines. The 3.8L block is virtually in every vechile that Ford makes. Turaus, Mustang, Windstar, F-150, and E-150. Well in order to save money and increase the tq that a truck or van would need, Ford developed the stroker kit using the 3.8 block. The stroker kit took the 3.8 engine to a 4.2L engine. So since 3.8's and a 4.2's have the same block, I simply found a crankshaft, pistons, and rods from a 4.2 and swapped them in to my 3.8 block. It's as simple as that. So now I've picked up an additional 30-40 more torque, and with the increase of displacement, I've also been able to utilize other mods such as bigger valve heads to increase my hp. Since the 4.2 swap, and other mods I've picked up another 40+hp and 40+ tq.

14.5 for a novice driver is pretty good from a 02 gt, it is capable of 14.2s to 13.9s bone stock, the key is in the 60ft of course.

97Stallion: thats awesome to hear that it did that much for you, plus you get to be original. I have the chance to do the exact same thing with my car. I have a bmw 325 which uses the same block as the 328 and I've heard that changing the crank shaft, blah blah, everything you did will virtually make the car into the 328 which esentially just has more torque. Nice to hear that it worked out so well for you. Thanks for the explanation.
