Huntsville, AL Track Closing: Another track opening

Found this on my big block forum...thought I would share with all y'all bama-hamians.
Quote:
Guys, there was a post a few days started by David Willigham regarding the closing of the famous 1/8 mile dragstrip at Huntsville. George Howard finally just had enough of fighting the new yuppie homeowners that had built around the track. Their constant complaints to the county commission led to all kinds of new zoning and noise ordinances.

Well, there is a new track in NW Alabama set to open in the spring. All concrete 1/8 mile with plenty of stopping room. Somewhere between 2200-2500 ft. The very popular ORSCA outlaw street car series has already committed to two races there next year. It's a great place for a track. I grew up there. My Mom still lives with 7-8 miles from the location.

It's called I-22 Motorsports park. There is no I-22 yet. For now it's still US 78. It runs from Memphis to Birmingham. It's open as an Interstate all except the last couple of miles into Birmingham. When they connect US 78 to I-65 in Birmingham it will become I-22.

Here is a link to the new track

Here is the ORSCA post stating it will be the season opener and also shows a partial schedule.

Yea I read about that. Madison County is dumb as rocks. They let people build houses where a 60 year old track was and then were surprised when they got complaints.

Don't you love it. I am so pissed that its going away. Sure, I didn't go a lot, but I loved having it and was really looking forward to going to some ORSCA races next year... Guess not. Stupid jerks.

yeah it makes reving up all the much better out here in harvest, just know those dumbasses can't do anything about shutting up me

it is really sad to me, haven't been out there in a long time, but I always enjoyed knowing I could be there in less than 10 minutes.. and hearing the cars off in the distance on the weekends made this place feel like home, I don't know if alot of you guys know but even though I grew up in florence me and my dad would go to the track here probably 4-5 times a year when I was a kid.

I lived 5 minutes from it when I lived at my parents. I loved that place. I went there all the time in High School.

I'm just tired of dumb people. You should be shot for even thinking about complaining about a drag strip that you knew was there when you bought the house.

Re: Huntsville, AL Track Closing: Another track opening

at least they are building a new track but why not 1/4th mile.... that way they can run 1/8th AND 1/4th runs....
