Check Engine Light - Help!

Ok, once again I need the knowledge of those much wiser than me. I took your advice and went to AutoZone to have the code read when the check engine light went on and it came up "EGR valve." I dutifully purchased a new valve and installed it and even put on a new EGR sensor, unhooked the battery to get rid of the code and then, when I drove it on the highway again, guess what? My "friendly" light came back on.

Now I am really confused. Again, all of this started after my last fill up of gas.

I hope you all are not laughing at my ignorance too much but do you have any other ideas as to what I should do? I am still trying to convince my wife that the car was a good deal. Any guesses at the looks I have been getting?

Thanks in advance for your help and patience with an old man!

Re: CHECK %&*&&* ENGINE LIGHT

you should put up the actual code... such as p0151. Just because the code is labeled "EGR valve" doesn't mean THAT is the problem, just that is the sensor that caught the malfunction.

For instance, I was getting a front o2 sensors indicating lean (yes, both)... the problem wasn't with the sensors, and it wasn't an exhaust leak near the sensors... I had to clean the MAF. So that means your code is RELATED to the EGR system.

Re: CHECK %&*&&* ENGINE LIGHT

Thanks Jimmy,

Now, one more dumb question. How/where can I get that actual code?

Ask Autozone to provide you the CODE not what their scanner says the code means. Oh, and the thanks button is ~~~> that way

Re: CHECK %&*&&* ENGINE LIGHT

what year is your car? do newer mustangs have those gas cap sensors that give check engine lights when dropped? just curious.

Re: Check Engine Light - Help!

Without having the actual code... Since it may have been improper flow detected, or even an EVAP code, etc (autozone/scan tool may misrepresent it)

I'm just going to throw out there.. when you replaced the EGR valve, did you happen to check the ports into the intake where the EGR goes in? In cars with carbon issues, that can block up pretty quickly (granted its usually the EGR valve that plugs first, but I've seen it go both ways)

Re: Check Engine Light - Help!

I did a visual check but is there a way to clean those ports? I made it so that taking the EGR valve off is easier this time.

Thank you for your advice and help

Re: Check Engine Light - Help!

yea you have to be careful, its not always where the sensor is its there or before in the line of flow~

Re: Check Engine Light - Help!

it will more than probably be the dpfe sensor, relating the egr system. ive seen the late model fords go through this pretty often and the dpfe was 9 out of 10 the issue.

Re: Check Engine Light - Help!

ditto on the dpfe. usually the code is a p0401-egr insufficient flow.
a little bit to add on. the PID (perameter identification) for the dpfe is typically aroun 1 volt at idle. let us know what you find.

Re: Check Engine Light - Help!

also another tidbit, ive never seen 4.6 mustang egr ports gets clogged up. its usually on the truck 4.6's where the egr ports are real small and retricted. those are easy to clean though, just remove the intake elbow. ok, ive said too much. back on topic
