Mustang predictions

Been reading on the net and thinking about the history of the mustang. With the new MPG laws(35mpg) that are looking like they are gonna pass for 2016. When do you think the mustang will have a complete overhaul again? If history means anything, could be fairly soon.

1965(64) - 1970 First design
1971-1973 Second design
1974-1978 Third design
1979-1993 Fourth design
1994-2010 Fifth design.

What do you think will happen, or what would u like to see happen.
Hybrid mustang anyone? I hope not!

Re: Mustang predictions

^hehe true dat...As long as they offer some form of v8 (hybrid v8's don't count), I really don't care...because the company is gonna do what they have to in order to stay above water, they don't care too much about the input of the consumer. They know that there are enough people out there that will buy a mustang just for the name.

But as long as they keep a decent v8 in the line-up, I'll be happy. It might be a refined, less raw v8, but a v8 nonetheless.

Re: Mustang predictions

Another great example of the government deciding that it knows better than the people. If I want to buy or sell a 8 MPG vehicle, that's my own damn business.

Hopefully the laws won't be in place by time we actually make it to 2016.

Re: Mustang predictions

didn't the charger have a 2-step type v8 that ran on 4 cyclinders if you were cruinsing, but if you punched it all would kick in? dunno how fuel effienct that is or if it works good, i just remember reading about it somewhere. whats the general mpg on the newer mustangs 99-2010?

Re: Mustang predictions

I forgot all about the power on demand engines. There was a couple cars that had that. Chryslers i believe. Have only seen one or 2 in the shop but never got to test drive them That could make for an interesting future build, depending on how the govt. does thier mpg tests.

2010 mustang is 16 city/24 highway mpg.

Re: Mustang predictions

Yah that was the VVT (variable valve timing) they put in a **** ton of cars, from the charger to the chevy tahoe. When cruising, it would run on 4 cylinders, and when hauling *** or towing, the VVT would allow all 8 cylinders to kick in.

Re: Mustang predictions

Who knows Ford my come out with a Mustang hybrid that get over 35mpg and puts some major power down to the ground. I hope they come out with something because I don't know what I would do w/o mustangs around.

Re: Mustang predictions

A nice quiet all electric Mustang will probably hit the road in 2016. By that time all emissions will be illegal.

Re: Mustang predictions

If I'm not mistaken the new 5.0 will offer cylinder shut off and direct injection. I figure a 6 speed auto and manual will be offered soon. The most important thing Ford needs to do is to keep the weight down in this car, this is a real problem for the Challenger right now. With this new law I can see an ecoboost I4 being offered as a base engine.

Re: Mustang predictions

If you have never seen the sheer power and torque that an electric motor can make, i can understand why you would be against it. Imagine an electric motor no bigger than a V6 engine, going from 0 rpm up to 20,000 rpm in a matter of about 3 sec. Now imagine that hooked to your transmission, through your drive shaft, and spinning your axles so fast the rubber just melts off your rims.

Obviously i know this isn't how an electric car would work. But in theory if you could supply the power to say a 440v motor out of a turning center and hook it up to your driveline, this is what would happen.

i bet that would sound really nice with some flowmasters on it.... actually it would sound like crap and i hate the idea... would be fun to drive, but i think i like my v8 better, even if it is slower.

That has the potential to blow the doors off any mechanical engine ever put in a car? Absolutely I don't need sound to feel like i'm going fast.

Not that the government would ever allow it to happen. Kind of like fords diesel that gets 65mpg that they won't sell in the US cause of the extra taxes and fee's for a diesel motor. Even though diesels can run just as clean or cleaner than a gas engine.

Re: Mustang predictions

your right there isn't. But there could be, imo. Nobody's gonna tell me that we have the technology to make a computer learn, or to make robotic body parts, or read someones dna, but yet nobody has made a working all electric car that can driver farther than 50 miles.

Re: Mustang predictions

the "killacycle" is the same concept and does 140+ in the 1/4.... i know they're good for the short run, but i don't know how they do constant at slower speeds
