transmission swap - I'm stuck

I am replacing the 4r70w in my family's 01 v6. Got the old one out no problem, but can't manage to work the new one into place. There is this damn ear on the driver's side of the bellhousing that hits the floor pan so that I can't get the trans back far enough to slip the input shaft into the torque converter.

It looks like the only way to get everything in is to take the torque converter off the engine, slide it onto the transmission, get it in place, bolt the torque converter back in, then bolt the tranny up. Makes sense in my mind, but looks like this is about impossible to actually do. I can't even see how the TC bolts onto the motor and I assume I need to align it properly (like when doing a clutch job).

Any suggestions? Also, I managed to break the gear on the harmonic balancer (I'm assuming its for the crank position sensor), anybody got one or know where I can get one? I'm boned without it....

Re: transmission swap - I'm stuck

you would try pulling up on the front of the engine to push the back of the engine down some to gain some room.

Re: transmission swap - I'm stuck

That's how I broke the crank gear. I have the engine tilted as far as I can get it before the car starts coming off the jack stands.

Re: transmission swap - I'm stuck

You have to put the torque converter onto the input shaft of the transmission first, then bolt the transmission up, then bolt the TC to the flex plate. Sounds easy, gonna get it done in a bit after I go to the damn dealership to replace the damn thing for the crank position sensor.

Re: transmission swap - I'm stuck

you always remove the torque converter from the engine to do a trans swap.

The TC bolts to the flexplate via 3 bolts on the outer edges of the flexplate. You will have to spin the engine to get all the bolts. The bolts are on the engine side of the flexplate.

Once you remove the TC from the engine. when you install the TC on the trans. you will have to spin the TC as it has to click into the trans 3 times before it's all the way in the trans.

Once you get the bellhousing bolted up to the block. you need to install all the TC bolts into the flexplate loosely before you tighten them.

Re: transmission swap - I'm stuck

Bringing this back up. Got the new transmission in in December. I'm backing visiting my parents so I am trying to work on it some more. The car drives fine now, the only problem is it won't shift from 2 to 3 unless you let off the gas or shift it manually with the shifter. The problem is present when the car is cold or hot. any ideas on it? We haven't flushed it, but we did drop the pan.

Re: transmission swap - I'm stuck

I think it's either going to be a tune problem of a valve body problem
