Tips on increasing HP in '91 2.3L???

So, I picked up my '91 coupe for $500 ( clearly the better choice btw that or 92 civic). I know 4 cyl. are the babies of the family, but I would like to do some thing to increase the HP. Most performance parts are for v6 and up, but there's gotta be something I can do aside from a complete engine swap. Any suggestions other than "just be happy with good gas mileage"? Thx

You could always stick a turbo on it, this would probably be the easiest HP boost..... butin my experience the 4 bangers are more expensive to get HP out of when you canbuild a very respectable 8 banger for under 2K (doing it yourself if you can)

You can remove the inner cylindar from the intake tube to open up the intake a good bit. Other than that, anything you do is going to be minimum gains until you start looking at forced induction.

And I know what you mean. I have a 93 4 banger that I daily drive. The mileage is great (now that I fixed the ICM issue)...but man does the power suck going from a 600 rwhp cobra to a 75-80 rwhp fox. lol

Yeah, I was actually looking for a 83-88 turbocoupe today to do a swap, or a universal turbo charge. I do all the work myself, but it would be cheaper to just buy a 5.0 than to swap to one. I did pick up a flowmaster delta 44 muffler w/dual outs and have a friend welding custom dual tail pipes. That should help a bit.

The 93's are 105. I believe they made that jump in 91ish or so. Before that, they were 88 at the crank.

Not really. You can't just bolt the turbo onto your N/A 2.3 but it's a simple and cheap matter to swap a turbo'd TC 2.3 into your '91. The outside dimensions of the motors are identical. Pull the Mustang's motor and drop in the TC's motor. Fabricate a simple mount for the VAM, swap the Mustang computer for an '87-'88 TC computer, make about 6 wiring changes at the computer harness connector, splice in the VAM connector and you're up and running with 200 hp. Add an intercooler, some mild headwork, Bob's log manifold and a 3" exhaust system and you're right at 300 hp. It's really very simple and has been done a million times.
Haven't dyno'd mine yet but I estimate I'm in the 350 hp range.

Happy New Year!!

Thnks for that. I was actually referring to bying a 5.0 being cheaper than swapping my 2.3 to a 5.0.

It is also possible to use a ranger cam (different profile with more torque) cylinder head work/exhaust work..

But as has been previously mentioned - The turbo 4 would be the best bet, and a lot of 5.0s would be struggling to keep up with a few mods on said turbo motor..

Here's some cheap help

I have a 93 2.3. A couple things that help are platinum plugs, coil packs from a 96-97 GT Stang, build a cold air intake with the filter inside the fender and a 94-95 GT mustang mass airflow sensor, lose the cat converter if you can, higher flow muffler with larger pipe, stock 94-95 GT mustang 19lb injectors and a boost in feul pressure to 48 psi. If you don't have it already, grab an 8.8 posi rear with decent gears from a gt fox(bolt-in). Later, look forward to a turbo from a turbo t-bird or svo.
