2003 cobra swap

Found a 2003 Terminator,black,w/48k for $21k. Thinking of swapping out the 07 for it since this was my original plan before I bought the 07. Opinions please?

Re: 2003 cobra swap

they are great cars, for 21k you can get a much better mileage/condition cobra. That car is worth about 17-18k if its in good shape with those miles, black is the most common color for cobras in 03 and its a ***** to keep a black car up but you already know that lol.

all in all for 1 grand I just went from 400rwhp to hopefully 450rwhp (you can install a pulley/belt/plugs/tune then no install costs) so they are very easy to mod and when done right can hold great power reliably for a long long long time, 500rwhp is about the limit without upgrading the fuel system some.

what specific info are you wanting?

Re: 2003 cobra swap

Yah that cobra seems high for the mileage. There are three cobras up here for less than 21K with over 10,000 fewer miles on them. There's a sonic blue one in Chicago for 15k at a dealer with 50,000 miles on it and a supposed SRA. Looking at pics, (to me at least) it just looks like it's been through the mill...

I'm sure you could find a better mileage black cobra down there for 21k/trade in Texas...if you want a sweet SB cobra, there's always this one for 2k more: (personally I'd work them down a couple grand or 23k out the door w/ ttl)

Re: 2003 cobra swap

Yes I know with little effort the terminator can be a powerhouse and this is why I was originaly goin to purchase one. I know there are some out there with lower miles but if you are not particular about what color you want and will settle for a redfire, silver, ect. Then sure it would be easier to find one with a little lower miles. But for me its gotta be black or sonic blue.

Re: 2003 cobra swap

You may want to check svtperformance.com for terminators. There's always a bunch of them on there for sale in the market section of the forum.

Yah I hear ya, when you're looking for a car like that, it's good to have patience and find the one you really want. When I get mine (hopefully in a couple years after school) it'll have to be either sonic blue, mystichrome or competition orange...in that order

Re: 2003 cobra swap

the number one rule is to simply not settle. you will know if the car is right for you, no need to force it. Also research common issues to look for... its asked about 20 times a day on svtperformance.com so search over there and also in their classified section.

Re: 2003 cobra swap

I've checked on SVTperformance and they have quite a few nice ones for sale.I'm pretty particular about what I will buy so no worries and it will be my 2nd Cobra in 2 yrs if I can find the right one.

the 03/04s have specific issues that can arise so its good to know the check list to mark them off your list when buying.

yah like the engine tick...something about valve guide wear in the left cylinder bank at idle...cylinder 7 or 8 slapping the head or something.

Re: 2003 cobra swap

I think that the 3 valve is a better engine. A friend of mine owns a shop & stays pretty busy with the Cobras, burnt pistons, blown head gaskets, pitted heads. I'm not anti Cobra by far, but I would stick with the 07.

Its all in how you treat that engine also. Some people never even clean their engines until its to late.

True, just think the 07 is a better platform.

Only bad thing about my 07 is that I am limited as far as HP goes unless I tear into her.

My best friend has a 08GT with a vortech on it. It's pretty impressive, it's never been to the track but he has a good street record. The 3V responds great to the boost. He is in the process of selling the vortech & putting on a edelbrock S/C. On the same note, had a local guy with a KB blowzilla & C4 in a 03 Cobra Bad A$$ but stayed in the shop. I understand your point on the Cobra, just think Ford fixed all the little 99-04 issues with the 3V.

The thing about the Cobras is that they were forged and built for making some real power...guys are slapping a KB or a Whipple and make 600-700 hp easily with some small supporting mods.
Sounds like those guys with issues either got a bad batch of cobras or just don't take care of them (or weren't taken care of before they owned them). Between forums and locals, I haven't heard too many issues like the ones you mentioned...at least burnt pistons and pitted heads don't seem too common.

I'm sure Ford solved many issues with the "new edge" platform with the S197's, but they are too refined for me...I prefer the raw (ancient) feel of the 99-04's and older.

Re: 2003 cobra swap

^^^ My point exactaly.Slap on a cai, pulley swap and a custom dyno tune and you have a freakin rocketship.Put on a KB.......time machine.Another reason people are so hyped about the new 5.0,its forged so it will be able to handle more power. They dont call it the Terminator for nothin.

the new 5.0 wont handle boost like the cobra though, not even close 03/04s usually go around 450-470rwhp before they need fuel upgrades

True and this is why I would rather have the Term even though that engine bay is cramped.I just cant get used to that new body style of the 10's.

Ive had her a year as of Dec 26 of 09.I love her but a Term was my whole plan after the 99 cobra.I actually had a black 03 Term (modded) lined up but the guy wanted to wait a week for his buyer to come even though I told him I had cash and would come get it NOW.Sooooo,I waited a week and no call, went lookin and found a 05 GT,paid cash and get this. The very next day he called and asked if I was still interested.I was pissed.I kept the 05 for a month and traded it in because I couldnt do the windveil blue, she was super clean but just not for me.My buddy was the dealer so he gave me a great deal with super low payments and im under 4k from being paid off as of now.LOL,ive had 3 ponys in the last 2 years and if I get this 03 Term it will be my #5 and 3rd black one.I just love Mustangs, they make me happy and fill voids in my life.

Hey nothing wrong with that. Cars in general make me happy and fill the voids in my life, and I have plenty of them American muscle cars to be exact, just hit the spot, they calm me and are my source of motivation

That's great you only have 4k to pay on her, I was so glad when I paid mine off, I even made double and triple payments for a little while to have it paid off before college.

Im doing the same and will be done shortly unless........everything goes ok on the Cobra deal.Im gonna have use some of my own sales skills to combat this car salesman. They are factoring in mods to their price. So Im gonna demand my mods to be factored in.****....The kooks LTs and H and CAI and tuner are only 3 month old if that and have less than 500 miles on them.

Hell yeah I would too. To me that's bull**** that they're factoring in mods, especially at a dealer. In all honesty, the car's already a little pricey for the miles, so that's the last thing they should be doing.

To bad you couldn't return the GT back to stock if they don't want to give you anything more for it. You could sell the parts for more online.

Re: 2003 cobra swap

The price is reflecting the mods that why its $21.2 and I could take it back to stock and have already thought about doin that.I think the whole reason they agreed to a dyno run is because I told then I had a modded 07 and they are probably thinking that the 07 would be easier to sell than a modded Cobra. Plus if they put it on a dyno PSI Performance is gonna redline it and take it to WOT so if anything goes wrong on the dyno it will be at their expense. So that will prove that the car can handle it and if it blows up.........their problem.
