Spark plugs

I do not need to buy any but every once in a while something will come up with a thread about spark plugs everyone puts in their own opinion most people say motorcraft or autolite or whatever but then they say gap them. Isn't the gap already set from the factory? All the ones i've bought are anyways.

Re: Spark plugs

In most cases yes, they are. However, in situations like forced induction, you don't want that wide of a gap as the increased air flow will actually blow the spark out like a birthday candle before it ignites the fuel mixture.

Case in point the NGK TR6 plugs that I use in my car. They come stock gapped at .048 I believe. However, if I were to run that wide of a gap, when in boost I would get all kinds of stumbling due to blowing out the spark. Now, normal driving would be fine. But, in boost, forget it. I actually have to lower my gap down to around .032-.035 to ensure the spark does not get blown out.

Re: Spark plugs

Always check gap on new plugs. It takes a few seconds.

I've had plugs from the same box vary greatly.

And as rob said above, I have to push it down to .032 for the cobra.

Re: Spark plugs

It's not "blowing out" the spark. It's actually harder for the spark to jump the gap when cylinder pressures get high (like boosted and sprayed applications). So you make up for it by closing the gap.
