Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

Had the dealer install a non-intercooled Whipple Supercharger on my new 2010 Mustang GT. I've heard varying reports on the power it produces, but Ford Racing's conservative estimate is about 405 at the flywheel. I've heard other reports of up to 460 at the flywheel. But, I know a guy with a 2009 Mustang GT who had the dealer install a Roush s/c, along with Roush exhaust. His supposedly puts out 435hp. Each of us is running 5psi, I believe.

Now for my thoughts. The Roush is definitely stronger than the Whipple, but not by a huge margin. Just a noticeable margin. The Roush seems to add more low end power, while they are very similar on the top end. I'll have to try his again, but both are really pushing hard beyond about 3,500 - 4,000 rpm.

Either of us could add boost and increase hp fairly dramatically. But, that would void the warranty, so we won't be doing that right now.

Another interesting difference is that the Roush induction noise seems to be noticeably louder. Not sure why.

Anyway, I thought you guys might want to read a real-world comparison on these two supercharger options.

Never heard anyone saying a Roush is stronger than a Whipple....just my 2 cents.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

I looked into this a bit further and found out the big difference is probably coming from the gears. He's running taller gears than mine, which allows him to enjoy more low-end torque, beating me off the line.

Even if you take his taller gears and Roush exhaust out of the equation, his s/c supposedly bumps his car to 435hp, while mine only bumps my car to 405hp.

It is notable that the Whipple is more easily upgradable. In fact, I could bump mine to 550hp by adding a heat exchanger, smaller pulley and bigger fuel pump. But, that would void the warranty.

To make a long story short, I am considering switching out to taller gears so that I can come off the line a bit faster.

Are you sure he isn't running a smaller pulley to put the car at 435? what are his supporting mods? Do you guys have exactly the same setups besides gears?

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

at 405-435 you should be at 345-365rwhp/tq where you are at (in manual take another 5-7% off that number for auto~) I would get a dyno done and inspect it.

A friend of mine has an 06GT with a roushcharger and it makes no where near its power.. and roush basically said "sorry".... its making 300rwhp/290rwtq... thats about what a bolt on car makes so just be sure you got what you paid for.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

I'll try to be more specific on our respective setups.

Mine: Stock 2010 GT, except for non-intercooled Ford Racing supercharger by Whipple, which reportedly makes 405hp. I've got a 5" pulley, and I'm running the Ford Racing program with my s/c, which I'm told involves 5 psi of boost. Also, mine has 3.73 gears.

His: 2009 GT, intercooled Roush s/c, which reportedly makes 435 hp. His pulley appears to be smaller than mine, but he is running 5 psi of boost. He has Roush exhaust, so that probably gives him an extra 20hp or so. He also has Roush suspension, but that wouldn't affect his time off the line.

Keep in mind that we would both like to increase our boost, but that would void the warranty.

What do you guys think? I'm thinking he's got me by approximately 50hp, but the bigger difference is the gears.

Have these car's been dyno'd? If not then I wouldn't worry about it. Manufactures post BS #'s on the reg.
Also, are the cars auto or stick?

That will give the prespective you guys need. Also, do a tune while on there.

I just checked to make sure on the S197s... axle back exhaust systems gain about a net of 2rwhp on stockers... so I imagine it's safe to say your buddy probably has 5hp out of the mufflers over you.

Correction: Mine has stock gears, which are 3.31 from what I understand. That makes more sense.

Just in case you didn't already know... gears do not affect actual horsepower ratings.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

ford factory tunes (even the ones for your whipple) will be EXTREMLY conservative and much room will be left on the table... but you cant change it without warranty questions either way it should be tons of fun, you will have about what hp/tq my 03 cobra did when it was stock which is not bad and enough to get into trouble with lol.

Do get a dyno its best to check regardless of the tune and make sure all is safe, plus you know where you are at.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

Yes, I understand that gears don't affect hp. But, I am trying to keep up with him off the line, so shorter gears may get me there more cheaply than anything else. Would you guys expect a big difference in acceleration ability if I switched from stock to 3.55 gears? I'm getting the feeling that this would be a more effective option than changing my exhaust.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

Replacing the mufflers by them selves will not help much maybe 2-5hp max on an Axel Back. I would think about doing the entire exhaust system, headers, mid pipe, mufflers etc. that plus a tune will help. again you run into voiding your warranty on the supercharger and car becuase of the tune. if you get new gears your gonna have to tune the car anyways.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

3.55 to 3.73 is not worth the effort, the percent difference is quite small. If it was from 3.27 maybe then. I wouldnt spend 500+ on 1 tenth of a second faster times (maybe 2 tenths) and the possibility of gear whine and hassle if the install is not done right.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

I'm not sure what the stock gear is in the 2010. I did however did test drive 2 Roush 427R. One had the 3.55 gear in it. I'm not sure if this was an upgrade from roush. how ever it did seam have more get up and go then the Roush that didn't have any gears listed

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

Standard for 2010 is 3.31, which is what I have. His has 3.55, which was an upgrade. His is basically a Roush 427R, but without the brakes and cosmetic add-ons. In other words, his has the Roush s/c, Roush exhaust and Roush suspension.

So, I'm wondering how much benefit I'd see if I went from my 3.31 to 3.55. If I'll have to get a tune in the process, then how much hp would that get me? Alternatively, I could go straight from 3.31 to 3.73, but I'd be worried about fuel efficiency suffering severely. Also, will I need to have my speedometer recalibrated if I change gear ratio?

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

if you went from 3.31 to 3.55 with nothing else (no tune) you would probably shave off a tenth (maybe 1.5) in the quarter mile~ I know 3.27 to 3.55 is about 2-2.5 tenths.

If you do a better intake, under drive pulley, exhaust, and a tune (good tune like bamachips.com) you should be around 300-320rwhp vs 275 stock

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

As of now, I am probably at around 345rwhp due to the Whipple s/c pushing 5psi. That kit comes with a K&N, so the intake is fine. But, the tune is enticing. I still think I'd get the biggest bang for my buck if I changed the gears and re-tuned. Aside from that, I'd have to spend a ton of money to keep up with his.

But, I must say, 405hp gets me off the line very, very fast. So, I might just save my money and do nothing for now.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

get a smaller pulley, tune it and have 480-500rwhp (I would keep it around 475 if it was me to be safe or even 450) and your good to go you probably will have to do a MAFIA at least, not sure on pumps/injectors but my friend has a procharger at 480rwhp on his 06 GT and he only had a MAFIA (MAF extendor).

If you are gonna void it void it right (warranty that is) you cant tune it without voiding the warranty.. but if they dont know hmmmm

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

Good point, but I am not going to void the warranty. I'll probably stick with what I've got now and maybe do some mods after 36,000 miles.

Re: Thoughts on my new Whipple Supercharger

yea, once the warranty is up you can look into doing a heat exchanger, smaller pulley, better tune and you will be good for like i said 450-500rwhp
