lets talk trannys

On this site we talk about suspension engine rear end wheels body interior and all that good stuff but we don't seem to talk about trasmissions as much. Sure there is the number one tip we give to newbies to get a tuner to adjust the shift points, but transmission can actually help alot and we don't really hear people talking about geting a tko or hey get a 6 speed.

What is the best transmission in a late model mustang? Are the six speeds waaaay better? If you could drop in any trans what would it be for stricly drag, street and strip, road race, or street car only?

Re: lets talk trannys

I just rebuilt my T-45 using parts from hanlon motorsports, passed on the upgraded input shaft.. I needed the synchros and upgraded a few gears while I was in there.. I fully expect it to hold up quite well. my factory T5 held up to a TON more power than this thing..

I'm sure the T56 is better, or a TKO but.. until I REALLY break what I've got from the factory, I'm fine with the trans..

TR3650 I'd had in my 02GT was a bit notchy/grabby but tolerable

Then again, I do it all, drag street and strip..

Re: lets talk trannys

yea autos have tons of room for improvment from the factory especially in 94-04 models where they are horrible stock.

I would do a six speed. I feel what fun is it to have a fun car to drive if you can run through the gears yourself.

hahaha...I was waiting for that one to be posted

I acutally don't mind the 4R70W, it isn't a horrible transmission, it was just geared badly from the factory.

Automatics especially. They are complex and scary. I think my fear comes from being a former Chrysler owner.

Re: lets talk trannys

If it's for drag racing. It's got to be an auto. No one on earth can out shift a computer. The best auto trans is a powerglide. It's only a 2 speed so not really great for the street but best for the track. If your street strip. then For an auto 4r70 or manual trans it's a tko transzilla good for 1000 hp. All a 6 speed is good for over a 5 speed is the extra overdrive if you have a very tall rear end gear.

For bracket racing and absolute BEST consistency, yes

For a fun night out at the track driving your car to it's full potential.. Give me a manual transmission any day

That is why you buy two cars.

I've seen vids of a few track duty cobras that got the powerglide treatment...good stuff.

Re: lets talk trannys

one reason i started the post is because after the engine is dropped in a couple years after i'm gonna want to put in a better trans I'd like to go with a slap shift or stay manual i've heard good things about tko but haven't heard much about other transmissions. If you had to drop a trans in a 99-04 gt manual what would it be (if money wansn't a problem unless its like a 6,000 dollar transmission)
