HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

Hello all,
I need some good advice on which to buy.

I am getting ready to purchase a New Mustang. With Ford offering alot of rebates on the 2010 models it pulls the base GT down to what I want to pay as a max (25K).

But the 2011 Base V6 is also around the same price....

What I see as the main diffrences between the two are

11, has same horsepower (305) as GT and gets great gas mileage 19/31,

10, the GT is, well a GT, there is no replacing the V8...

I will drive this car alot, about 30K a year,

Thanks

Ben

That is up to you. If you want the rumble of a v8 or the gas saving abilities of a v6. If it were me, I'd get the v6.

Look and see what financing option they are offering. I know Ford is doing some 0% options on certain models and I would jump on that before choosing V8 over V6.

Either car will keep you happy...the V8 rumble is unmistakable though.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

I'd go with the GT,besides how many people do you know that started off v6 and never stepped up to a v8? Everyone one I have ever know that had a v6 over time got into a v8 so just do it now.I dont see that 2011 v6 goin over 400hp safely with a blower.Slap a blower on the 2010 gt and you can safely have 435 to 470 WHP,Heck there are guys on S197forums that are runnin 497WHP on a stock block daily driver.I wouldnt push that but hey,not my money.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

hey all, good info, got another question for you all,

Is there any major diffrences in components between the V6 and V8? As in items such as say steering components, or drive line parts... does the V8 with its higher HP have some items that are milled a little stronger that the V6 needed??

In the 90's I bought a 68 Coupe V8 289 instead of a V6 because if I were to build it up the V6 wouldn't handle a 289 if I decided to drop one in, certain parts were only manufactured to withstand the V6 power...

Is this the same case with the newer models? If I were to buy the V6, even with the 305hp of it, and start adding performance parts that upped the power on it, will I run into breaking weak links on the V6???

BTW stopped at the dealership again and they have a 2010 GT with the premium package MSRP'd at 34K, with all the rebates they immediately reduced it down to 28.6K, and I'm thinking they could go to 25K...

Or 24K for an 11 V6 base model?

Thanks

Ben

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

It depends on the models...the 2010 v6's came with the 7.5" rear end with no tlok (limited slip), and it is recommended to add one if you want to push more power, as the stock tlok is weak and can fail. The 2010 GT's come with the 8.8" rearend with tlok stock.

I think the v6's might have lacked a rear sway bar as well while the GT's came with one stock...not really a critical thing, but nice to have. I think the brakes are pretty much the same, at least they were on the 99-04 v6's and GT's.

Now the 2011 v6 comes with dual exhaust standard, as well as a traction lok differential...so it is built to handle the extra power it's pushing...but as said, it is limited in how far it can be pushed, and it will never have that v8 sound.

As far as which car...that's up to you. I'd personally go for the v8...you'll be wanting the sound and torque, and both are more easily achieved with the GT. But there's nothing wrong with the 2011 v6, a very strong, respectable car that will be fun to drive.

Great info,
I think I'm leaning towards the 10 GT, as long as I can get a great buy on one which I think won't be a problem,

also from talking with another guy who has a GT he was able to increase his MPG from about 13 to about 21 (he claims) by adding a cold air intake, throttle body, and a free flow exhaust system (I think he was reffering to a cat back exhaust system).

He claims it cost him about 1500 and he bought the higher end stuff for it? Anyway I'm thinking thats possible to do but not an 8 MPG increase with just those items...

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

Yah 8mpg seems a bit extreme...I hope he tuned the car after those mods, if not he's running lean.

I've heard the GT's get pretty decent mileage on the highway. Of course city mpgs will probably suck, but my 3.8's not too great in the city either, so you can't expect the v8 to be good.

Those mods will probably help out some with mpgs, but the tune is the key component. Tuning after those mods to adjust the a/f will keep you from burning up unecessary gas. Also running an economy tune on 87 octane will keep your mpgs from slipping. That'd be the preferred tune for daily driving. Then switch to your performance tune using a higher octane to haul ***.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

even 21 mpg is silly low. I got 25 mpg in my GT just this past weekend with sonicpony over the course of a full tank that included 3 hours of decently hard cruising (stop and go traffic, some revs, etc)

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

O.K. quick technical question here...

How much HP and mileage could be ganed by utilizing aftermarket "bolt on" type performance gear on a 2010 GT....Like I mentioned earlier the cold air intake, throttle body and free flow exhaust. Not talking blowers, turbos or any engine tear down for internal parts...

In other words could a 2010 GT be boosted up to the numbers that the 2011 GT puts out (411HP and 26MPG)?

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

Now don't quote me on this because I don't own an 05-09 GT or a 2010 GT, but I'd say you could see gains of up to 45hp with a CAI, exhaust, and a t/b after a tune if done right. So that'd put you at about 355hp with the 2010 3v.

The S197's and 2010's respond to mods way better than the previous generations, so smaller mods like CAI's and exhaust, things that alter a/f can be effective after a tune.

I wouldn't say those select mods will get you 412 hp to the crank, but with some other mods to the engine I think you could achieve that number easily. Hell, with the money you'd save on the 2010, you could probably buy a supercharger, slap it on and be taking the 2011 GT's, lol.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

TB is as good as a paper weight unless u do a blower and CAI,tune,Lts,h or x pipe won't even get you near 350 WHP on a s197. You will need to throw in cams, delete plates and a good dyno tune if you want to see that WHP #. The bang for the buck on a s197 is a blower, the na route is just to much money for that kind of HP.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

they may look a lot the same on paper but the GT will be much more fun and enjoyable. I would personally (after making similar mistakes) hold out a year for the 2011 GT when they come down in price for the 2012s to come out and you can pick one up for mid 20s or so depending on options~ plus that gives you time to save up so you can get more options etc, a 2011 GT wont be a let down, but a 2010 gt will when it comes to mods to play catch up to the 2011.

Great point, good things come to those that wait.If you wait a couple yrs you can get a decent price on a new or slightly used 2011 or 2012 and another plus will be that all the 2011 buyers will have worked through the bugs and recalls if any.Cobras (Terms & GT500's) will be droppin in price also, they are already poppin up all over C.L.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

I think I have decided to go after the 2011 V6 premium... I was looking at the 2010 GT only to see if I could get a great price on the car but not so.

Looks like the 2010 GT Premium is still at 28-30K with the X-plan and current rebates of $3500
considering that the 2011 GT is 32K for the Base, and 36K for the Premium, or go with the V6 Premium at 28-29K and the HP is almost matched to the 10 GT, plus 31MPG, unless the 2010 GT price drops another 2-4K personally the better buy is the 2011 V6.

So looks like the 2011 V6 Premium is the winning candidate...
I will post up with pic's and info once I find the right mustang,

Thanks all for the great info it helped to fine tune my selection...

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

Let's pretend for a minute I'm your older brother and you were thinking about buying a mustang. Then you tell me you were thinking of the new V6 or maybe a 2010 GT. I'd immediately grab you by the back of your neck...pull you close and with my meanest and most serious voice yell "If you get anything other than the new 2011 GT I'm gonna kick your a$$!!.
If you don't want a performance car then get a new Honda. If you do want a performance car then don't whimp-out. The Coyote engine in the new 2011 mustang is an engineering marvel cranking out some most serious horsepower that guys with older mustangs (like me) spend thousands of dollars trying to attain.
I love my '08 Bullitt for what it is but without a blower I'm stuck with just over 300 ponies that I promise you...you'll get use to all too quickly. If I wasn't so "buried" in my '08 I'd get an '11 in a friggin' heartbeat. To settle for anything else is nuts..N.U.T.Z.! What are the rest of you guys thinking of?
If fact I'm thinking of selling a kidney to help finance one myself. You guys

Just because you can get something now doesnt mean you should vs waiting. You may regret it an you may not, just something you will have to determine on your own... it is a VERY hard thing to not take a nice car NOW instead of wait for a nicer one later... its an impulse thing. i would recommend waiting a month or two then see how it goes and see how you still feel.

Re: HELP 2010 GT or the new 2011 V6???

Hi All,
well I decided on the 2011 V6. I know there were alot of you out there cautioning me to wait, but unfortunately that wasn't an option... my regular commutor vehicle was showing signs of giving up the ghost with 180K on it...
It all boiled down to the 2010 GT or the 2011 V6..
Tourqe and power off the line with lower MPG or MPG with only 10HP less than the GT...
To me buying the 2010 GT and getting the MPG hit had to have alot of incentive in the way of $ from the dealer, unfortunately they didn't come down far enough to cover that spread, and the models that were left over were not either the color or package that I wanted.
The 2011 V6 on the other hand really fit what I was going to use it for, a commuting car with acceptable MPG, and the color and package I wanted just happen to come into a dealership last weekend..

So far I have had it since Sunday night and love it!!! I filled the tank yesterday with 10 Gallons after driving it 300 miles so far..

Thanks all for the great advice...I look forward to learning more about the Mustang here in the future from you all...
