No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/11/yo...shortcuts.html

This is something I haven't done in a long long time. I usually wait around 6-8k miles to change the oil in my Mustang. I run Castrol Synthetic, which is also expensive as hell.

To each their own though, its your money not mine.

I have always been a 5k person myself, but to be honest, it has been waaaay longer than that since I changed the oil in either of my vehicles.

I change mine on average every 5,000 or so with Mobil 1 synthetic.

Oh, and I use the cheap crude. Whatever is cheapest, which is usually just Oriely's brand.

Does it really matter that much anyway? Oil is just oil, right?

I remember hearing for some time now that oil can last much longer than 3k, it was the filter that couldn't though...

Anyone confirm/deny?

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

I usually do mine 4-6k depending on what kind of driving I do and if I'm busy or not. I aim for 5k but I typically procrastinate a thousand miles lol.

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

I change the Mustang's out on average at about 4000 miles. I go to my Ford dealer 29.99+ tax and fees comes to about $33. I get the 5th free and it takes em about 45 minutes plus they rotate the tires.

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

i've always been faithful to the 3k rule. most i've ever gone is maybe 4k if i didn't notice [i keep my trip on]... come to think of it, its about time to get another oil change in the 6er. i figure it def. can't hurt to do it every 3k miles even though i know plenty of people who wait much longer.

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

I'm usually unable to do an oil change on schedule so I'll change it around the 7,500 mile mark, if I had to give a number. If I had the cash and the time I would do it every 3k miles.

As for oil filters I heard that they can go much longer than oil, that is, it was you can change your oil every 3k miles but oil filters can go as long as 6k miles.

Speaking of that. There was a story a while back about a 5.0 that had all the oil replaced with water. Ran for a good while before it seized up.

And does anyone here know about oil stabilizer?

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

There were several correct points made in this thread.
One. All oil is the same. It's the additives that make the difference.
Two. Without an extended life oil filter. It needs to be changed every 3K miles. The filter will become a restriction in the system after that.

I personally change the oil in my cars every 3K miles. Even the ones that I run mobil 1 in.

Ford dealership suggests ever 5k. That's what I go with. If anything goes wrong it's their bill. Because that's the only place i get my oil changed at and I keep receipts.

Thank You. I hate to hear about people who push their oil filter's life to the breaking point becuase they have been miseducated about oil life. Oil can last a very long time if it has a reliable, clean filtration system. Additives also do make all the differences, including the good and the bad.

If your going to push you oil change intervals over 3000 miles, please use a filter that is rated for your length of time or atleast change the filter in regular intervals while topping off the oil level during these changes.

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

Oil change is really situational to your driving style, time and your car.... If you drive it hard you are going to need to change it more often, easiest way to check is the color of your oil or if your mpg is going down (that is if you drive consistently enough to have a reliable mpg constant, you'll notice less efficiency when you're due for a change). Sometimes I can get away with 5 or 6k, if I drive lightly or infrequent. Driving daily and with a little more pep ends up around 3-4k.

I hear the newer mustangs are rated for 5-10k. (I'm guessing they must have a better filtration system?) I know my model and most are 3k.

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

I run Royal purple 15w-40 in my 4.0 Ranger with long life filter and change it 8000-9000 miles. Now in my Mustang I run Schaeffer oil 10w-40 with long-life filter and change it every 7000 miles. Schaeffer oil is the $h!t.

I'm a 5k person myself. On the 90 it's pretty much twice a year with dino-oil. The other three cars get it religiously at 5k. Luckily I have them all set on even numbers so it's easy to keep up with. Cobra is due again at 40k, Focus at 45k, etc...

Re: No Reason To Change Oil At 3k miles

I did it in my truck after 300 miles but thats because it finished the engine and its usually supposed to be 100-500 miles for the first change to get the metal shavings and what not out of the block.

Amen. They can't back pedal on their own statments. Mine even writes the sticker out to 5,000 miles.

The dealership I used to work at even sent out emails about your routine maintenance schedule, provided that you opted in for it. Oil changes, tire rotations, etc..
