is eBay recommended for buying a car?

Hey do you think buying a car on eBay is reliable? I mean I'm trusting somebody who I've never met before.
Ford : Mustang on eBay.ca (item 200570460237 end time 04-Feb-11 23:50:56 EST)
This car looks real nice, the guys got really good reviews 100% and feedback.
What do you think?

Bought mine off of autotrader.com. Sent me all the info, picks, receipts etc. Flew to Milwaukee checked it out and drove it home. Can't be more satisfied. Good experience.

Re: is eBay recommended for buying a car?

i think it really depends on who you are buying the vehicle from, but do your research.

btw if you do buy that, i would get rid of the stuff that says "saleen" since it is far from one...

Re: is eBay recommended for buying a car?

As long as it's as the advertiser says it is, Ebay has things to protect buyers. I don't think I would ever do it, I like to just deal with a person and haggle with them for a car. I'm a Craigslist guy myself! Ebay is too complicated for me lol.

MarkuzLS1 bought his Corvette off eBay. He seems to be happy with it.

I bought a motorcycle off of eBay before. Didn't give any cash until I saw the motorcycle in person. Then handed over the money. I wouldn't buy without seeing it in person, no shipping for me.

Re: is eBay recommended for buying a car?

I've bought my cars from Houston and Kansas City. It just depends on the seller. Contact the guy and swap some information, ask as many question as you feel necessary. Don't swap any cash till you can inspect and drive the car. I flew to Kansas City with a Cashier's check and I was ready to buy a return flight home if I had to.

I would do far more research on an ebay vehicle and make sure the seller has a good reputation etc etc. There are scams on ebay just like any other place.

+1 do your research! My dad just bought a escavator (track hoe) from a guy off eBay, pay $16000 for the equipment, $1400 just to get it shipped. Drove it 100 yards and it blew up. Block was full of water. He called a mechanic to look at it and proceeded to try to get money back from seller with no help. So then he tried to file with eBay but he only had 3 days from time it was delivered to file for a eBay buyers protection claim. Too late. Screwed $6000 for a new motor. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!!!!

To most Mustang enthusiast it is worth much more than a Saleen because it has sevral things that a factory Saleen wouldn't. For instance ....it has a Mustang Steeda Exhaust. No Saleen has that & Ken Bell pipes...Saleens wouldn't come with that either.
Is what he wrote

um...looks like you are unsure of somethings... a real saleen is special because it doesnt have that other crap on there and it is original... meteorachick thinks the saleen badges should come off bc its not a real saleen ... she is a true enthusiast and i wouldnt question her about this...i mean if it had a body a kit on it then i would say ok...its a replica...but it doesnt have any saleen parts on it.... so i agree...but do wut u want..itll be ur car

I would definatley use ebay. you dont have to buy the car without looking at it in person and can most likely meet the person selling it and take it for a test drive. i have bought 2 cars off of ebay and have never had a problem.

That guys is a dumbass. His car is far from a headturner and Cobra wheel are far from a unique set these days. The Saleen stickers need to be removed as he is reprsenting something he obvisouly has no idea about. His car is far from a Saleen in everyway. Really, he's missing a lug? Can't he put a $3.00 lug on? It's a GT + Hurst Shifter, DVD Player (that actually isn't that cool - I like Double Dins), Catback Exhaust, and a Saleen Sticker package.

Re: is eBay recommended for buying a car?

Bought a 91 Gt off of ebay for 1600 guy said it was in good shape pictures looked good. Rented a SUV with a trailer hitch to drive all the way up to CT. to pick it up and it would not even start and was covered in rust and looked nothing like the pictures on ebay. I was pissed even though I got my deposit back I payed for the rental car and to stay in a hotel and they guy had alot of sales with 100% positive feedback. WTF......sorry for the rant

The saleen stuffs what scares me. Anyone who puts misleading stickers on a car tend to push it too hard....that's why I bought mine new, if that's not an option I need to drive it first and get a feel for the sellers attitude towards the car. Flooring it at every stop light takes a lot of life out of an engine.

Re: is eBay recommended for buying a car?

The car looks clean from the pics, but pics can be doctored and deceiving...as said the guy talks about how clean and awesome the car is yet it is really just a deluxe GT with Saleen stickers missing a lug nut with some pretty serious road rash on that left driver's rim.

I'd definitely do some research on the seller and the car before handing over any cash. If you're not comfortable with looking at cars or extremely knowledgeable regarding engines and body, take a friend or someone who is with you to inspect the car.

+1 craigslist is awesome, with cars there is no way of knowing unless you drive it, stick to local...

Re: is eBay recommended for buying a car?

Def see it in person and drive it for yourself. I almost got screwed buying a motorcycle off of ebay...which I ended up reporting it and stopped myself from losing $6k. If they act shady or beat around the bush about stuff then don't waste your time. I'd def look for something local though. Hate to drive 400miles and end up being a waste of time/money. Just my $00.02
