Unhappy Thick white smoke and oil everywhere...HELP!!

I have a 91 Mustang that I got on craigslist. I have had to replace the alternator and battery and tires but it seemed to be burning oil. My husband and his freind said they did an oil change and 4 weeks later my car was having issues when I pushed on the gas it wouldn't go until I revved it up (its an Auto btw) . I took it to a tranny shop and they said it was low on oil, like bone dry. we put oil in it and it was fine for 2 weeks. when it started actingup again we checked it and it seemed dry, dipstick was dry anyways. we added 4 1/2 quarts of oil and the dipstick then said it was way too full...when I tried to drive it this thick white smoke came out the back of the exaughst. We drained about 8 quarts of oil and refilled it w 4 quarts. it was doin ok for about a block. now there is white smoke again and oil dripping out the back of the exaughst. A friend looked at it and said she thinks its the head gasket, my sis thinks its the pistons and another freind said the engine is shot and needs to be rebuilt...if anyone has any ideas....please let me know asap...HELP!!
Thank you
Alice

Oil out the tailpipe is bizarre. If that much oil is getting by the piston rings the motor is history. And white smoke is antifreeze. Thick black is oil. Does the smoke have a sweet smell to it

If the smoke smells like antifreeze, the head gasket is most likely the cause. If it smells like burning oil, valves or rings are gone.

Ya...valve guides are prolly history. I would never suggest this on a still good motor but yours is pretty much history. Go buy some of that stuff called restore. You put it in your oil. It may fill enough of the holes that you can get a little more life out of it but it sounds finished. And don't use restore in a still good engine.

I will try that. Should I drain the oil or anything? Someone told me to flush it w the hose??? Is it worth rebuilding the engine or do u think its a lost cause??

I say time for a leakdown test. Most likely an engine rebuild or replacement is in your future.
How many miles is on the car?

Well a rebuild is worth it for sure if you want to keep the car for a while. It might be cheaper to just find a low mile motor to install... Flush what with the hose...the cooling system. Don't put water in the crankcase. Restore has soft metals like copper and lead in it that will fill inconsitencies inside the motor but it wears off in about 2500 miles then all the metals that were in the grooves falls out into the oil. That stuff is a last ditch effort and should never be used in a good motor. Yours sounds shot so it can't really hurt
