Lets talk oil

Alright guys. Quick rundown. Only oils that use a group 4 basestock are true and real synthetic oil. They include Amsoil, royal purple and red-line. All the others meet the governments definition of synthetic oil however they are a hydrocracked group 3 and made from conventional basestocks. Conventional oil is derived from a group 2. If you aren't gonna stretch out the oci and still change synthetic at 5000 miles you totally wasted your money because even the wal mart brand super-tech can do the 5000 mile interval and your wallet is better off using it. Now the 5w20 oil spec is a complete joke and was only recommended to save ford millions in carbon taxes. Use a 5w30 at the very least and if you spend alot of time above 3000 rpm or live in a warmer climate a w40 is your best bet. Moly is great stuff and I recommend it to everyone wholeheartedly. Anything else just ask

Re: Lets talk oil

Stupid Question...

My 98 GT called for 5W30...My 03 Roush calls for 5W20...

When was the change for 30 to 20?

Also benefits and/or risks of switching from 20 back to 30?

Re: Lets talk oil

An important thing to remember when determining your oil change interval is the quality of the filter being used. Just because your oil can last for 5000+ miles doesn't mean the filter can.

yea I use mobile 1 even knowing its not 100% full synth. I change it every year so how ever many miles I get (probably 2-3k). I dont mind the fee as I would change it yearly or XXXX miles.

Use 5w30 not 5w20, thats what I would do.

Just about any filter can go 10k unless you have serious engine issues. In fact the filter filters better as the media gets clogged up. Even the crappy fram gets better as time goes by.

Not a dumb question at all. In 1999 the government really started enforcing the CAFE laws so ford changed the spec because a 5w20 uses less fuel at start up. Once the engine is warm it's a mute point. Switch back to a w30. The best oil weight to get is a 0w30 or 0w40. The oil starts very thin and pumps quickly to get the oil to the critical components immediately. And a 0w is a true synthetic...Dino oils cannot hit the 0w spec without major refinement

What 40k miles. You'll be fine with a good quality 5w-30 or a 10w-30. If your not going to follow the extended drain intervals that synthetics offer I suggest going with a good quality Dino oil. Rotella, pennzoil yellow bottle,Quaker state. All good oil. Hell even wal-mart oil is fine to 5000 miles. If your gonna go with synthetic I suggest royal purple, red line or Amsoil. Amsoils sso line when used with an Amsoil filter will protect and clean for 25000 miles and is the best bang for your buck. The sso line is a 0w-30. Best oil on the market today. And if your going to go that route pick up a quart of red-line break in additive for topping up. It has the highest levels of zddp you can buy and will rejuvenate the add-pack of the oil. And if your going with Amsoil buy a bottle of moly from napa to throw in. The other 2 already have it in their oil. Moly will give you noticeable effects after a tank or 2 of fuel

Since it was asked in your oil thread, I'm going to assume that it is.

Any oil is fine if you change it out after 5000 miles. Synthetics are for extended drain intervals

Alright Ev. Cobra calls for 5w20. Understand why 5w20 is recommended by ford. Is there a negative side effect of sticking with 5w20. I won't go higher than 10w30 on the cobra. 5w20 makes me a little nervous because of the brutal heat we have down here. I also use mobil 1 and change it every 3k.

If you don't want to answer it, then fine. However, you don't need to make the poster feel stupid for asking the question.

I thought he was being a smart ***,calling himself stupid. If he reads the thread the answer is already there. And what's with all the attitudes today. I am helpful whenever there is a question I can answer however all of these questions have been asked before. The search function is useful. And where exactly did I say anything about a stupid question. How about you gfy k

K..I apologize for getting butthurt. You want to use a 5w-30 or a 10w30. If you are going to follow the extended drain intervals of a synthetic go with a 0w-30 or even a 0w-40 if you spend much time over 3000 rpm. And follow the oil manufacturers specs. If they tell ya it will go 10k miles believe them. Unless you have serious blow-by issues then just use conventional and change it once the oil smells like gas

Has nothing to do with you really. Dark asked where the answers were, so I told him and he ran over to see them. That's all.
