supercharger/turbocharger?

just kinda wondering...is it possible to make your own supercharger? and if so, would it even be worth all the trouble, or just cheaper and easier to buy one?

I wouldn't. Don't want your engine to go boom.

Unless you have a CNC machine, a lathe, and a whole lot of tolerance measuring tools sitting around, then no, your best bet is to just get a kit.

i figured, but i have a friend who has access to probably any tools you would need to make one. i wasnt even considering it really, just a question. if it were possible though, it would make for an interesting long-term project..

Re: supercharger/turbocharger?

you can piece together the parts yourself and save, but you cant make the actual supercharger yourself and come off cheaper.

Agree with Spec. that is a can of worms you don't want to deal with.

Re: supercharger/turbocharger?

be careful of ebay... cheap is not always good. You have to know what you are looking at .... and you dont want to buy someone elses busted parts.

Re: supercharger/turbocharger?

unless you have alot of specialty tools and equipment and alot of engineering smarts you better go buy a kit don't want to blow up your engine.

Re: supercharger/turbocharger?

also note selling used kits can end up costing you about half the orig value but you may have to pay to fix things along the way. Its also very hard to sell a car thats had a power adder put on it as people are scared its been raced a lot.

Re: supercharger/turbocharger?

Ya now that I work in a machine shop I see how much time, research, engineering and money it takes to make things like that. You really have to understand the process from beginning to end...and a lot of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing...if your lobes (positive displacement) are out of spec by tenths or ten millionths, hell maybe even millionths, your supercharger is not going to perform very well.

I'd leave it to the professionals...probably save more cash and prevent headaches in the long run.

100% right. You get what you pay for. Think about it. Why do companies like Paxton and procharger charge 1500 bucks just for the snail but you can buy an eBay kit for 1000 bucks. Because the eBay kits use sup-par components and hardware. This one us a no brainer. And honestly with enough time and patience I am sure an experienced machinist could build one however by the time you factor in time, effort and material you are much better off buying a system. You may save a few bucks by buying used stuff piece by piece but from experience I am telling you just buy a complete kit new, with all the supporting mods. The weakest link will fail first and when buying used(abused) parts you don't really know what your getting
