*Urgent* need help asap

My friend has a 2003 v6 and when we got back into the car it starts up fine but he can't put it into gear. Does anybody know how to solve this?

If it is an auto there should be a place by the shifter that says unlock by it you take your key and stick it in the hole and it unlocks it.

If it is an auto, there is a solenoid that won't let you shift out of park without depressing the brake and they are known to go out.

Yeah he was pressing the break... And yeah no key hole. We got it fixed. A wire connecting to break was severed. Thanks for the help
