Convertible Top Pump with Metal Shavings

Hello there,
I've used this site a lot in the past, but never actually posted.
I've got a '89 Convertible, and a couple weeks ago, the top stopped going up or down. It makes a clicking sound and that is all. I checked the connections all the way through, and the power was good. Then I read on here to try tapping the hydraulic motor with a hammer. The poster said if the top worked when I did that, the motor needed replaced. Well, the hammer did work and the cylinders actuated. So, now I'm all ready to buy a new pump, but something stopped me. I noticed a lot of small metallic shavings on my left hydraulic cylinder (but not the right one). The left cylinder looks dirty, the right doesn't. I don't know where the shavings could have come from, but I don't want to replace the motor if the cylinders are the problem. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
