No cat fine?!?

Know running with no catalytic converter is illegal. Has anyone had the unfortunate opportunity to get a ticket/fine for that? Anyone know the fine? I'm in VA if anyone has gotten it in VA, or other states should be close. Thanks guys, just curious.

If the cops in a bad mood it can be big. Up here in alberta all we get are fix it tickets but I've seen guys in cali get big tickets.

In NC I'm told they can impound and up to 10k in fines on a pollution controlled car. My pop lives in McLean VA and he tells me to dive softly around there especially on Sunday's

I've never been ticketed for not having cats!.. In order for a cop to know you don't have cats he would have to look under your car!..

Never meet a cop that was willing to lay down on the ground to look for cats!.. Lol.

In NC it was always DMV enforcement that handled this, they merged with the highway patrol now. The 'DMV/State Troopers' that handle this and big trucks ride two up in suburbans. Still, where they bust ppl is the muffler shops that do the work. Haven't herd of someone getting in trouble on the highway in several years.

In Ohio they actually have what they call a rolling inspection station I.e a statey on the side of the road with a inspection ahead sign and they will check your tire tread, muffler windshield, e brake etc etc. I'm sure they will give u a fix it ticket the first time but would assume after that it would be big money UNLESS your vehicle is like 20+ years old (can't remember how old exactly) then they don't require having cats

Here they stop tractor trailers and dump trucks at random and do that, including weight check.

In SC, you get in trouble if you ask a muffler shop to take them off, but you can get high flow cats. Nobody else ever checks.

I was told one time that here in NC they can't even replace with a high flow if the current one is working. Dunno for sure though.
