Gears

Want to change my 2012 v6s gears. Which gear should I change to. I hear many ppl telling me the 4.10 since it would make the acceleration amazing.
Can someone please tell me how gears work. What are the advantages and disadvantages of upgrading.
Thanks

I hate to sound like a dick or anything, but please use the search function. I know I personally have replied to many "gear" threads on this in the past week or two...

To be honest I saw it. But still I don't understand it. It was something like a ratio. I have an auto does that mean it would shift gears at higher speed?

Re: Gears

I apologize again. Installing gears is talking about the gears in the rear axle. Simply put, the gears correlate with how many times the driveshaft turns versus one full rotation of the tires. 3.27 was my stock gearing so the driveshaft turned roughly 3 and a 1/4 times per every one full tire rotation. 4.10 gears allow for 4 and 1/10 driveshaft turns per one full rotation of tires.

Basically, a steeper gear allows for much more rapid acceleration and better RPM band placement after shifts in upper gears. While it will limit your top speed on high-HP applications, it will actually increase your top speed on stock applications. However, it will also cause rpms to be higher at most cruising speeds like 45, 55, and 75. With your auto it will actually shift gears at a slightly lower speed than stock gears, but you will run through the gears much faster, which will make you seem a lot faster.

I've heard gears taking as much as 0.6 seconds off a 1/4 time. That's crazy hard to do for a single mod under $1000.

Gears, aside from spray, are pretty much seen as one of the best bang for your buck mods you can do.

Accepted rule of thumb is 3.73 for 5speeds, and 4.10 for autos for the best of both worlds in performance, reliability, and MPGs. However, a lot of people choose 4.10 for 5speeds(like me), and 4.30 for autos, and are completely in love with their choices. Don't fear the gear.

But honestly, before gears, I'd HIGHLY recommend investing in a tuner. Tuning your car's shift points will net you a pretty sizeable performance increase and also with a tuner you'll have the ability to calibrate your speedo after your gear swap and get custom tunes when you continue to mod your car.

+1 you will need a tuner b4 gears in an auto, cause your speedo and shifts will be off

+11 on getting a tuner first if you don't already have!.. And double so if you have an auto!..

Thank you soo much for ur detailed description. I will install a 4.10 gear after my warranty ends.
Cheers

No problem! Be sure to search around for more opinions. 4.10 will be awesome for you, though, since the v6 is a bit torquey.

If you have any more questions or thoughts, please be sure to share! We all appreciate it.

Older stang? It's an '02. Haha. If I had to guess, roughly 245 to the wheels.

Have fun waxing! Always feels great.

Wen said older I meant not the 2010-2014 body. Actually I would say my favorite type of stang is the one u have then I would say the 2011+. I hate the 05-09, dunno y I hate the bak lights. But some are pretty cool though.
And thanks I hope I don't mess it up, first time waxing

There's a lot of great write ups on detailing all over the web and YouTube. And you might shoot SpectorV a message. He's crazy about detailing. Believe it or not, his immaculate cobra has over 60k miles on it!
