So, I'm looking at buying a radar detector... 2 tickets already for speeding... 16 over and 20 over.

I have a budget from $200-$325. I've been looking at the Escort 8500 X50 black, I've heard it's one of the best for the price, anybody have any experience with detectors in this price range?

Also, from multiple sources and tests, I won't really even consider a detector under $175...

Heard great things about Escorts, but no personal experience and theyre a little over your price range. Also hear good things about their laser shifters. People will tell you both will do you no good. Reviews suggest otherwise. Will report personal experiences when I get them, but prolly wont be till later this year.

Yeah, I've seen the newest Escort 8500 X50 blacks for about $280 on amazon though.

Well that's just super duper, been pulled over by a Virginia state trooper, he says radar detectors are illegal in the common wealth of Virginia! I said I bet cloaking devices are illegal too good bye!

Sorry this thread reminded me of the song by clutch heh. Personally I've never used a detector, don't they go off whenever it detects a cb type signal?

Ha, not in Oklahoma umm, not sure, the better ones have good filters to stop a lot of false alerts, this one has a pretty good filter I've heard.

They will do no good unless an officer is actively checking speed. What they do here is have two cops. One that sits back in the trees and pinpoints specific cars that appears to be speeding ( just an officer hidden on the side of the road not in a car) , a second cop in a hidden car further ahead waits for you and checks speed as you go by. Since they weren't actively checking then there is nothing for your scanner to pick up until you've already been caught. I've been nabbed like this before, and its getting to be a more and more popular tactic for highway patrol.

Highway patrol here also has a 05-09 black mustang that I've seen "pace" people before. They run over the speed limit and pull over people following behind them for speeding. Cops are getting quite tricky, and here at least, a detector will do little to no good. I ended up selling mine and just crossing my fingers if I'm over the speed limit.

Re: Radar Detectors $200-$325

i have the wireless Escort solo S2 and it works great. The cops where I'm from aren"t that tricky and the radar detector picks them up from so far away you could be going 100mph and you would be able to slow down in time. It's a great detector. I really like the cordless as well.
