need speedometer help

Long story short my speedo doesn't work. Pulled the cluster and cable out. The speedo moves when I spin it so I got a new cable but it didn't fit into the sensor/ gear thing the gear looked good inside and out. I connected the old cable and spun from the gear end and my speedo moved figured it was good. Re- ran old cable in dash spun from underneath car speedo moved. Connected to tranny and plugged in no movement... Really annoyed at this point any advice would be great

Did you disconnect from speedo, connect to tranny and try to spin? If it spins then the gear in the tranny is stripped or broken.

Actually what I did was leave it connected to the tranny with the cluster out and watched the cable and it did not spin my partner at work said to change out the speed sensor. Did that and still no movement now my question is do I really need the sensor? I ask because its a mechanical speedo and the new cable I got looks like its supposed to fit in the tranny with no sensor I'm gonna try it when I get home today
