This is a question I had too.. I currently have a 99 GT but if I could I would go 05 and up.. They are newer and faster although the 99-04 look better, they aren't fast enough unless you have alot of money to put in it.. You can make the s197 look real good by doing appearance mods, considering they're already faster than the 99-04

They aren't much faster than the 99-04 gt cars. Sure there 40 more hp but they're no more torque and 250 more lbs. Given equal getting there's less than half a second between them in the quarter. Hell my old 96 gt (intake, box tune, o/r H, 3.31 rear, shifter.) ran with the 331 geared 05 gt. The pi cars are a lot faster than the older non pi cars. Dont sell the sn95 platform short.

I traded my 03 GT for my current car(09 GT). The 09 rides alot better, and seems to handle better. If I could get the sound of the 03 in my 09, that would be awesome!

Get a 04, the 05 was the ugliest styles ever they had no curves. They look like a shoe box with wheels, and a think the 2v 4.6 sounds better than there 3v 4.6

I preferred my bolt-on/mild suspension '01 GT 5spd to the stock '05 GT 5spd that I drove, but that's only because the mods on the '01 made such a big difference. It wasn't hard to tell that the S197 was the better car, and given equal mods it would be a pretty big difference.

Edit: Here's my old '01. 43k miles when I bought it in '05, C&L CAI/plenum, BBK equal-length shorty headers, catted Bassani X-pipe, Borla XR-1 catback, Eibach Pro-kit springs/struts/shocks/swaybars, Gripp caster/camber plates.

Depends on the part. And what you spend. The part you buy first on a 197 may not be the one you buy first on a sn95...

Yes! I'd stay away from the 05 they have their fair share of bugs. The 06 was ok, but not great, the 07 is better for sure.

I have an 06 no real issues either. But the few things that were fixed in 07 were fuel fill issue and the TPS sensor I think

Well that was in 2004. Hardly comparable with 2012. Did you know that the 1987 Mustang GT only had 225HP? Or maybe the 1979 GT, which had like 140HP. Do you see the trend? Hardly a slap, just progress.

Pretty sad that Hemis in the 60s and 70s were making almost twice the power haha

Starting in the late 60's, insurance companies started raping (<---sorry, seems appropriate in the case) the people who had and purchased muscle cars. Some would not even insure these cars. So the HP dropped starting in 1971. Then in ~1973 came the oil crisis see here that made gas supply get all jacked and prices went stupid. Gas mileage had to go up and dropping HP with lower compression engines was the cheapest way to do it. He'll, I think this carried over all the way through to the 2003 - 2004 years for Ford, IMO. It's good to see Ford keeping up with everyone else in HP these days. IMO, the only reason our gas prices haven't killed our HP this time around is because the cars are much more efficient. And thank God!

I love my 01 I wouldn't trade it for any 05-09 unless its was a Saleen, I'm not that worried about horsepower I race Karts and late models so if I really wanna race ill just go to the race track and let it out. My opinion the 99-04 has the best body style, the new 13 have the best motors and interior.

Agreed new edge has the best looking body style by far! The 05 models are wayyyyyy to boxy IMO, I think the 05 body style would be at the very bottom of my list of all Mustang Body Styles, also that is my honest opinion, not just up talking the new edge style cuz I own one, I went from a new edge 6er to a new edge GT cuz they are just so sexy looking, Again that's just my opinion.

The 05-09 are just plan with no curves, the GT looks a little better but the v6 05-09 is one of the ugliest mustangs made in my opinion. Just a very boring design.

I would go with both buy a sn95 and a sn197 or test dive both cars and you decide

To be honest, they are both great cars, if I were you I'd take whatever my budget is, and purchase which ever is lower mileage/better running/cleaner record, for your budget.

I drive a 2012 5.0 today. My first 2 Mustangs were 2004 and 2003, looking to get another one for a second ride. But coming from a guy who owns the new body style, I would never get the 05-09. IMO the SN95 looks way better, cheaper to buy, maintain, and mod.

+1 05-09 = Shapeless box with ugly features.

05-09 are definitely not shapeless boxes, features are there if you know what to do with them
