Gears! Ratio's! What to expect?

You will probably think this is a really stupid question and I feel embarassed having to ask you. But, I won't know unless I do. Right?
Well, heres hoping that you will share that experience and knowledge with me! It's about the gears, ratio's and so forth PLEASE.....
I think I would like to change my gears, I know I want to install my Steeda Tri-Ax Short Throw Shifter and since I need to open my differential to replace my Carrier and Pinion bearings, wouldn't this be the best time. What are gear ratio's! What exactly does that mean. I know my 2007's stock gears are 3.31. What can I expect then with each of the gears below? Are there any pros or cons? How would they differ from the original 3.31

This is a really good question! I don't know the answer, I've always been told that 4:10, 4:11 will ruing your highway mpgs.

The ratios have to do with numbers of turns of the driveshaft vs the rear wheels. A 3.55 gear is actually 3.55:1 ratio. For everytime the driveshaft turns 3.55 turns, the rear wheels will complete one revolution. The shorter the gear (gears get shorter as their ratio number increases) the higher the tq multiplication and you will get more of that being sucked into the seat feeling. But it also takes higher rpms to go the same speed. For example (not exact numbers but used to prove a point) with 3.31 gears you will be traveling 70 mph at 1800 rpms and with 4.10's the same speed might be achieved at 2600 rpms

That makes since, so for of the line you want long gears and just cruising you want short.

No just the opposite, most that drag their mustangs run 4.10 and lover number like 3.31 are best for cruising and mpgs

I have 3.73's running 2300 rpm at 65 mph but I do have a tremic tko 500 5 speed so mine will be a little different

Like I said those were by no means meant to be actual speeds and rpms, just using number to illustrate my point

I would say if you want better acceleration but not sacrifice too much gas mileage you should go with 3.73.

My car has 3.90's in it. As long as I cruise in 6th, it's not as rough on gas.

With 3.73
You're saying I will have more torque( low end power) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd but, what happens in 4th and 5th? As it is I rarely drive in 5th even on the freeway, because if I need an out, I don't want to have to down shift. Plus driving on the Los Angeles freeways the only time you can drive the speed limit or faster is late evening.

3.31 vs 3.73 is about .25 faster in the quarter, 4.10 is a bit more and so on.

The .25 is not really huge by any means FYI in terms of feeling it. Going from 2.73 to 3.73 you get much more of a bang for the buck like older stangs had.

The trade off will be looking for a 6th gear in my 5 speed mustang? Please correct me if I am wrong. But even more so?

3.31 And 4.56
Gears will not give you more tq, only engine modifications can do that, but the gears will make it feel more torque ish.

My biggest complaint is the sluggishness upon acceleration! I am big on maintenance so my engine runs great. It just feels like **** when l accelerate from 1st to 2nd and 3rd. Hence this Thread. I thought without the installation of a supercharger perhaps gears would do the trick. I would love to hand over my car to someone trustworthy and say make it quicker without breaking my wallet.

So, you think that 3.73s will help? Is there anything else? Keep in mind, it is my daily driver.

Shoot, I was given a 1969 Mach1 for a wedding gift a couple of years ago, actually in 2009. It is a project car. l should be focusing on that. No, thats a whole different story

All right, I've made the appointment and my car goes in the shop this Thursday to have a complete Differential Bearing Kit and 3.73 Ring and Pinion gears including labor.

The Cost $600.00

But, now my husband is telling me to upgrade my rearend to an 8.8! Is this better? Do you foresee any problems? Also, what does this mean performance-wise? The mechanic said it would be better. How so? (l forgot to ask him)
