Can you identify a missing part on Mustang 4.6L engine?

While changing the oil under my 1996 Mustang GT (automatic transmission), I noticed a hole that appeared to be missing a cover or plug.

It is directly on the bottom of the engine, centerline, just to the rear of the engine block and just forward of the transmission pan.

It is a a hole about 2 inches in diamter, maybe the size of a golf ball, that I can look up into the (transmission?).

The area behind the hole and the pan has evidence of red fluid (I'm assuming transmission fluid), definatley not oil.

I don't have a manual or diagram to identify what should be there, but I'm sure its not supposed to be exposed like that.

Any Mustang owners or mechanics that can tell me what that part was?

It is a rubber plug that goes in the hole on the bottom of the bell housing of the transmission. this is an access hole for the plug for the torque converter on the trans to drain it when needed. it will not hurt anything for it to be open. if you feel that you need to plug it you can go and get one from a dealer.

That is right there is a rubber plug for the hole in the trans bell housing... And not to upset you or anything... but if there is a significant amount of (red) tranny fluid coming out of that hole you'er Trans input shaft seal is leaking...Use Lucus Tranny Fix... Just don't over fill... The stuff works wonders! Used it in my 1990 full sized Bronco

it is just a metal sheild that you take down to get to the tor converter bolts not really nessarry but if you want to get it your local dealer should have it someone probly took it down eather while doing engine or tranny work

glynx01 is correct. The hole you speak of, is there for the purpose of accessing the torque converter drain plug. There is supposed to be a rubber grommet that goes there to cover it up. Having it open like that won't hurt anything. If you feel the need to have it there, just go to a Ford dealer and ask the transmission technician if he has a spare one lying around that you can have. Hope this helps.
