Installing new cd player in 98 mustang?

My friend told me that the power cord is universal for all CD player, so I won’t have to get an adaptor. I took the top radio (the tape player/radio) out and found out none of the old cords from my CD player will plug into the new one. I realize I need an adaptor for the speakers, but do I need one for the power cord too? Or does the power cord connect to the lower part of the radio (the actual CD player)?
