I was told because it was the first year for fuel injection and something about the intake computer. Is this true?

You were told wrong. you may need to upgrade to a later model ECU (computer) with a Mass Airflow Sensor, but these parts are available in junkyards & from Ford and many other aftermarket vendors. Congrats for buying one of the best looking GTs in the '80s. The '87-93 models were cheesy looking IMHO.

There are TONS of aftermarket parts for these cars, everything from mild to WILD ($$$). I suggest you pick up a 5.0L Mustang enthusiast magazine & familiarize yourself with the car & what's available for it.

From what I understand, you can't reprogram the Engine Control Unit (ECU) which is probably what you called the "intake computer". However, I think there are some aftermarket ECUs you can buy.

However, there are plenty of aftermarket parts you can put on your Mustang motor. I would suggest you join a Mustang Owners website, they can probably tell you much more than I can.

Here's a place to start:

If you have the early motor with a carb, , it's easier to modify...but there isn't a problem with either....
