I want to add 3.73 gears, what do i need?

I have a 97 mustang gt convertible. I have alot invested into it, and I want to add 3.73 gears. My rear if im right is 8.8 Now besides the actual gears which comes in two parts, what do I need to buy, And how much would it cost to install if I had the gears...

you also need the complete installation kit to install the gears, it consists of new bearings, crush sleeve, axle bearings, ETC, figure on close to a $1,000 bill when all done and installed.

Usually you have to buy a ring and pinion set, lets say from Richmond, or Randy's Ring and Pinion. You would also have to buy an install kit which should come with shims, pinion seal, inner and outer pinion bearings, and carrier bearings. The gears and the install kit will prob run you about 300, and you looking at about 5 hours install time with a professional shop, depending on their labor rate (around here its around 100 bucks and hour) itll cost you around 800 for the total job. This is TOTALLY worth it. Gears are one of the biggest mods you can do for a street car and ther 4.6 in your mustang with respond great. (im not even a ford guy)

I would pay a professional to do it for sure. There are several measurements and contact patterns that need to be checked before you finally get to start driving it. Bearing pre-load, tooth contact pattern, pinion depth, etc. All these are detrimental to a correctly operating differential.
