Why are the hoses coming off of my radiator while I drive?

The return hose that carries water from the engine back in to the radiator keeps coming off. At first, I thought it was loose or bad hose clamps. I replaced the hose clamps on both sides, and have tightened them as best I could. This did not help. Both sides of the hose have popped off on separate occasions. When the hose is connected, I do not have any overheating problems. Also, the thermostat has been removed, as it was apparently causing an earlier problem. We opted, due to time constraints at the time, to not put a new one in.

We also recently flushed the system, though as I mentioned earlier, the hose clamps are not the problem, nor have I overtightened them.

I imagine this is something to do with high pressure, but I cannot imagine what could be causing it.

The car, by the way, is a 1986 Mustang LX

How does the coolant fluid look? Is it normal or white or dark or oily or scummy? Wondering if there is a head gasket problem allowing high pressure into the cooling system.

Are the clamps tight? It takes a LOT of force to remove a hose if they are tight.

I think the hoses are the wrong size for the radiator. If they go back on the radiator without a fight they are too big. It should take a minute or two of cursing to get them on. I had this exact same problem a couple years ago, except I was in a snow cat 5 miles from the highway. D'oh!

EDIT - should have read more carefully: just the hose that pops off is suspect.

Get a new radiator cap.

Don't just replace it with another unless you verify that the one on your car is the right one.

Sounds like it's maintaining too high a pressure.
