Gear install price for Ford Dealership

So I called the Ford dealership where I purchased my 11 mustang from and inquired about a install price for gears. I told the service department that I was going to purchase Ford gears, all the install parts needed and was strictly looking for the dealership to install them. I asked for a price and the gentlemen advised he would get back to me.

I had then received a phone call back in just under an hour and told the install price for the LABOR ONLY was between 625 to 675.00 dollars. Holy ***** Batman and that did not include the price of the gears, install kit, pinion and bearing kit. Just labor costs. Wow, that seems a little high. I figured at most 400 but not what they quoted me. The dealership said its around a 6 hour job.

That's stealerships for you.

Mine quoted about the same.

They also wanted to charge me 2 hours of labor for a 30 minute driveshaft loop install. (No need to even remove the driveshaft.... Just support the trans while the cross member was removed temporarily).

Logic and reason doesn't apply...

Those a$$ clowns don't get it... If they were REASONABLE and worked with people, we wouldn't hate dealing with them.

Yeah. That's messed up! Too many good mechanics around to pay that price.

Bro, you sound like me. Lmao. I thought the same thing. Don't get me wrong, I don't expect someone to work for free and everybody should make a buck and a living. But that's what I call getting hit, dry with no lube. Needless to say I won't be using that dealership and that was where I even purchased my vehicle. I'm certainly not going to pay that price. I would think the install should be between 350 and max 400 dollars. Heck I'm buying the gears, pinion and bearing kit along with the install kit and gear oil. It's just the labor.

Dude that's fine. I payed $700 labor at my dealer in labor. They were competitive with every other shop in town.

Really. So your saying that's a fair price. Interesting. That seemed high in price.

It was fair for my area. I guess that could change greatly depending in where you live. I felt it was very fair compared to other quotes I received. And being that its a dealer with a warranty

I hope Maryland is more price friendly. Lol. I would think the price of install should be no more than 400.

I just called another Ford dealership in my area and they wanted 800 dollars for the install. That install only and I was supplying everything else including the friction modifier, gear oil, gears, install kit and pinion and bearings. They on crack too

they charge by the hour, and that job probably they estimated it WAY above what it should take lol. Sounds like thats about 8-10 hours of labor~

If you dont get them installed right you will end up having to buy new gears and try again though~ just FYI. Some gears whine and make horrible noise especially when not installed correctly.

A tune is also required to fix the speedometer which a tuner is not cheap

I agree that I certainly want the job done right and don't have an issue with paying what I consider a fair and reasonable price. Too me, 900 dollars is absolutely insane and I'm supplying the gears the install kit and all the hardware . The one Ford dealership told me its a 6 hour job. Luckily for me I have a performance tuner.

No jk. I'm sorry guys that's messed up. If I had 3 lifelines, I'd phone a friend or something. Lol. Keep callin. I like the guy who went to the performance shop. 300-400 sounds normal. Some of those guys will guarantee their work. Not the parts but what they do. I'd keep lookin if you can.

Oh, heck yeah. How many quarts of gear oil do I need to buy? Two or three?

Not 75w 90. That's what comes in the combo kit.

I was going what ford recommended.... The manual says 75w140 for both rear ends... (3.7 and 5.0) Capacity varies on both.

Depending on how much the friction modifier fills up, you may only need 2 quarts of gear oil.

I'm having my gears installed tomorrow and a shop quoted me 350-400. I asked if he would do it for the 350 and he said yes. Another shop quoted me 300 but when I asked him if he guaranteed it not to whine he said that all steeper gears start whining at around 80-100 MPH. I can't believe that because I drive a semi and it has some pretty steep gears and I only hear road noise.

When installing gears into your stang, the application calls for a friction modifier oil. I have ordered Ford Racing friction modifier but dont know if it will get here in time. Can you use another brand of friction modifier other than motorcraft?
