It's more than that. It's a Ford Mustang SVT Cobra Shelby GT500. At least that's all the branding that's on my 2013.

Lol. It says, u bn bit! Like, by a COBRA!
Idk where these guys are coming up with some of their information. If SVT put their package on it, it's a cobra. My 97 was a COBRA.

Has anyone got documented proof of GT500s carrying the Cobra name? Terminators were Cobras, the name was even molded in their bumpers, just like the older Cobras. Besides a snake emblem, I have never seen a GT500 being called a Cobra in official literature. They always allude to it, even with Shelby making their modified one the "super snake." Still, I have not seen Ford refer to their GT500s as Cobras at all.

Until they do, I'm just calling them Shelby GT500s.

Even on the Ford website. It is the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500.......just bears the Cobra emblem, not its name

The Shelby GT500 is not a cobra. Yes it wears the snake emblem but it is not a cobra. A cobra is an SVT mustang made anytime between 93-04. That is it.

Lol. I'm confused. Because my Shelby also is bearing the SVT badges. So were the original Shelby's cobras?

well, as you see on my link, it is called "The Cobra of performance cars" but the part in question is whether or not it is titled the Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500. Which it is not, it is just the Shelby GT500...it has SVT badges because it was designed/built by the Ford SVT. but that doesnt make it a Cobra.

What I thought, was correct, but I just wanted to validate so I would exactly what the differences were.

I guess you should make Ford give out a test before you can purchase, to make sure you know exactly everything.

Ok, I've been a mustang owner and fanatic since 1976 when I got my first Stang a 67 6 cyl 3 speed coupe. The first Cobra was Shelby AC Cobra 2 seat open car. That started it all. Then the Founder of the Mustang Lee Iacocca called up his friend Carroll Shelby to put some serious sports car touches to the Mustang to make it sell even more. They gave him a couple hundred 65 Fastbacks and he turned them into GT-350's at his shop in Venice CA. Basically a street legal race car. Took out back seat, roll bar, Race exhaust, tuned the engine up to 306 HP from 275. The air cleaner was an OVAL shape and said Cobra on it. Had working scoops, bigger brakes, new front air dam and the famous white with blue stripes. After 67 I think Ford bought the Cobra name. Shelby is quoted as saying once they started making them luxury sports cars with AC, Automatic Transmissions, convertibles, etc they were no longer Shelby's in his mind. Ford threw the word Cobra around liberally. There were Big Block Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet engines in the 60's and early 70's. There were also Torino Cobra Jets in 69-70. The lowest point was the 125 horsepower Cobra II's in 76-78 including the King Cobra, really just decals.

Then when the Fox Mustangs came out there were Cobras before the SVO and SVT's. In fact in Canada the GT was badged as a Cobra. The true SVT Cobras came back in 93 I think unless they were SVO's. But the 95-2003's were SVT's. I have a 96.
After 2003 the Shelby GT-350 / 500's came back, not sure of the years. But SVT also made the Lightning pickups, and several pocket rockets.

In the 80's Lee Iacocca called up Shelby and said lets team up after he left Ford for Chrysler. They started building SHELBY LHS Turbo Omnis, Lancers, and a few other what Shelby called his pocket rockets. He also said that was some of the most fun and cars he is most proud of. Then Lee said I want to build a modern Cobra, then the Viper was born. Again basically a street legal race car.

I think to fight over whether a late model GT-500 is a Cobra or not is splitting hairs. I would certainly take anything with the Shelby name on it, any day of the week. I'm sure I may have made a mistake, especially about the 2007 and up Shelby's but this is the basic truth. Also for awhile, maybe even still today Shelby American in Las Vegas was building and selling what they called the continuation series of Cobras. The 2 seaters with either 289, 302, 351, or 427 engines in them. RIP Carroll Shelby.

Btw, you can find out this info on the Shelby American site, or WIKI Ford Cobra.

Pretty much SVT does all the work on the GT500s and stamps Shelby's name on it, so it's kind of both... Now the Super Snake or GTS or GT350 that's Shelby

To the best of my knowledge there was only one Shelby GT 500 Cobra... n that was made and given to Carroll Shelby out of honor. But naturally the Shelby is not a Cobra, but the are both inspired by Carroll Shelby

The Mustang offered a 5.0 from 1968 to 1995. It wasn't sold as a 5.0 until 1982 when the GT was officially offered. The years of the 4.6 were then from 1996 to 2004. Not including the original 281/289 days.

The 4.95L Windsor IS the 5.0 as even today's 5.0 does not reach 5.0 liters, rather a 4.96 or so.
