GT/GT 500

Ok, so this is going to sound stupid, so please forgive me.
I have always loved the look of Mustangs and finally getting one.

So my question is that I hear Mustang GT, but then you hear Mustang GT 500.
Are they different?
If so, how?

I heard some things that made it sound like the GT 500 is the Shelby.

Guy you guys help me out here?

Thanks, and sorry for the dumb question

GT = 5.0 liter engine gt500 supercharged 5.8 liter. GT500 has alot more power from the bigger engine and supercharger. Also, better suspension and so on. Interior is pretty much the same except the gt500 recaros have lemans stripes with the matching color on the exterior stripes. Theres more difference of course but im off to dinner. Im sure more guys will add more detail.

Is it correct to say the current modern day Shelby Gt500 is NOT a Cobra mustang. Would this be an accurate statement? The 2004 Shelby Cobra is a Cobra but the Gt500 is a Gt500 and not a Cobra.

That's exactly where I was going with this. Lol The Gt500 is not a Cobra yet it has the Cobra emblems on its sides. Very odd and confused why. Its not a Cobra!

A gt500 is definitely a cobra. The whole idea for the gt500 came from the terminators back in 03-04. That is why you will see the snake emblem on the side of every gt500 and in their grille. The gt500 came with a 5.4 always and now a 5.8. The gts have always had a 4.6 until 11 when they had the 5.0.

I only hear people referring to the Gt500 as being a Gt500. I hear the 03-04 Terminator is called Cobra. The back of the 03-04 Cobra reads Cobra. The Gt500 reads Gt500 not Cobra. So if Gt500 is a Cobra Shelby Cobra, then why doesn't people call it the 2013 Shelby, Gt500 Cobra ?

This semantics.. Look at a window sticker on a 2013 gt500 and see what it says. By the way the rear of a gt500 says Shelby. It only says gt500 (on some cars) in the side stripes. Matter of fact, even the rear faux cap and steering wheel on a gt500 have the SAME cobra emblem you will find on any terminator. Coincidence?? I think not.

Cobra was more of a SVT term. Since 2004 the SVT group in ford does not exists anymore. However, ford is al about heritage, hence the cobra emblems on the GT500. Before SVT the group was called SVO, so there was obviously "cobras" even before the formation of SVT in 93, which was the first year of the Cobra R. Again, to mimic most people in this thread....a quick web search can get you all the information you are looking for. Lol!!!!

A Cobra and a Shelby GT ARE NOT THE SAME CAR... they are diffrent cars both created by Carroll Shelby... but by no stretch of the imagination are they the same car... the original cobra from decades past its today's dodge viper... the cobra name and snake emblem have became trade marks of Carroll Shelby... today the Cobra it's the fastest mustang ever built, and the Shelby is one of the most powerful PRODUCTION mustang ever built

This thread is so full of ****.

03/04 terminator are cobras. Produced by Ford with help from svt.

S 197 gt 500 cars are not cobras. They are shelby gt 500's. The reason you see the cobra badges echo back to the classic gt 500 snake badges. Yes they look like the cobra badges on sn-95 cars. The gt500 is produced independently of shelby. It is designed in part by the COMPLETLY LEGIT svt department. They also are responsible for the raptor product. Ford licenses the Shelby name. It is not built in a shelby factory. Cobra is a Ford trademark. While it could be associated with the GT500, imo it is not as the cobra badging echo a different past than fords sn95 cobras.

Obviously there is a difference between GT and GT500 models. Google is your friend.

Both the cobra n Shelby Gt 500 are creation from Carroll Shelby either directly or indirectly... research Carol Shelby n you'll c that any where u c the snake badge, Carroll Shelby had a great deal of influence and involvement... trust me

So, in short the Gt500 is solely a Gt500 and no need for Cobra emblems on its sides because its not a Cobra. Besides no need for a snake to be on a horse/mustang vehicle. Horses do not like snakes . There not friends and makes no sense. Lmao. To think this poor OP only wanted to know the difference between a GT and Gt500. Gt are really fast and Gt500 are really really really fast and the King of the mustang world .

I'm about to call every Shelby owner I know so yall can look him in the eye and tell him his car isn't a cobra.

Wait, maybe the biggest mustang ever produced isn't a super snake either.

SMDH.

There are two cobra named you guys are confusing with each other. The 03-04 cobra and the current cobra jet. Shelby had nothing to do with the 03-04 cobra.

Isn't the GT500 Manufactured by ford then is sent to Shelby America in Las Vegas to be modified to become a Shelby Cobra? I was at the facility not that long ago. They were upgrading suspensions and interiors and bumper covers and placing Shelby badges on them.

Mustang Cobra = cars created by SVT (98,99,01,03 ect)
Shelby GT500 = modern GT500s
Shelby Cobras = the classic cobra roadster that got Shelby started
