No Cats vs. the Law

I've currently got my stock cats with a FRPP x-pipe and mid-pipe bolted up under my car. I want to remove the cats.

Will I be able to pass emissions if I use my Bama tuner to hide the error code? I don't want my car being impounded or get a fine if I go to get an inspection sticker and fail the inspection.

What do I need? New headers (long tubes?), a new x-pipe, anything else? Help please.

Well even if you were to pass emissions nothing would stop a cop from pulling you over if your exhaust is too loud an looking under your car to find out no cats anywhere resulting an impound depending what state you live CA is the most strict state For that sort of thing

To pass a look inspection you could hollow out the inside of the cat and keep it in its stock location...

Depends on the emissions program where your car is registered. Is it a visual, ecu check, sniffer, etc?

I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. So I'm in the city with a decent amount of cops, but I've never seen or heard of anyone getting pulled over for loud exhaust. I've got my car inspected twice and I don't think they looked under my car... My dad also says he hasn't seen inspectors look under his car in years either.

Btw, don't let my avatar picture fool you, I have a 4.0 liter V6. I will be running Borla S-Types but I still don't think it would be super loud like a V8.

When I looked up the emissions testing for your state, it appears that all they do is a visual test. So what I would do is get the cats hollowed out because if you go catless then Murphy's Law will kick in and someone will check under the car. If that were to happen you would get a fix it sticker and you would have to put an exhaust with cats on and go back.

Yea you will be fine if you take out the cats the v6 won't be super loud. I have o/r h pipe with 10 series and I have never been pulled over for the exhaust. And for the visual inspection you could go to a place where you know some one and he will pass you or bolt on some heat shields where the cats used to be then take them off after the test

If they do a visual test you're not going to pass bro, you gotta do your research in your district but it by law that any car after a certain year without cats is illegal

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll do some further research for the laws in my area.

I was also able to find out that I'll need an O/R x-pipe.

I'm honestly gonna do o/r x pipe for a few months just to hear how loud and obnoxious it can be

---------- Post added at 05:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:37 AM ----------

But eventually you have to put some high flow cats on there at some point before next years emission test, unless you live in a lowly populated area they don't care as much. But in the city you gotta have some form of cats underneath.

Yeah, I also looked at high-flow cats. I just put my Borla S-Type's on yesterday and man they are loud enough. I think I'll save the extra bucks and put it towards an Eibach kit.

Probably not a bad idea. I think theese cars sound better with cats. Not so many sputters and its more of a deep sound at least on my GT. I had mine hollowed out for like $50 and it does pass visual inspection
