$8-10k budget WHAT CAR?

I should be in the market for a new car before Christmas with around 8-10k $.

99/01 cobra (most likely 80k+ miles)
99-04 GT (low miles and possibly boosted)
05-09 GT (a few under $10k under 100k miles)

Or maybe go the ls1 route.....idk

OPINIONS!!!!!!!

Hmmm I'd say look for an 01 1/2 - 04, boosted even better!

Hate to say it but your best bang for your buck will be a LS1...

If staying Mustang also consider a garage queen 94/95 car. The pushrod is dirt DIRT *** cheap to modify, easy as hell to work on and they are practically giving them away these days. I've seen more than a few 94/95 Cobras with sub 75k miles on them go for well under what you are looking to spend.

If its one of the cars in your top 3 list I'd go with the lowest mileage GT you can find, preferably an 02-04 car. However there are some really nice earlier modulars floating around too. I mean mine is higher miles but in pretty much mint condition.

IMO a lower miles GT over the Mach is the better buy for the $10k range. You can get a beat up 4V or a really cherry 2V for that price. At least around where I live. Hell I'm seeing 20k mile 2Vs that obviously some old person had and garaged for 10 years go for his price range. That's basically a new car and besides the 4V the Mach didn't get anything special really. I mean besides the seats and wheels and sail panels blah blah blah.

Only caveat to this is if he needs a numbered vehicle for whatever reason and then I would also look for a clean Bullitt.

But for out of the box performance you simply cannot beat a LS1 Crapmarobird, not for the price you pay. In all honesty once you install racing seats the interior is not really worse than the SN95, just a differnet sort of Fisher Price than the Ford has. After that its a simple matter of a rear end upgrade since the motor is a beast and the wide ratio T-56 in there is the transmission that all Mustang owners seem to always be drooling over.

I've trapped 129 mph on street tires with the stock 3.42 7.5" 10 bolt GM rear end, so they will hold some power, even in a 6spd. However, I am currently on my 4th stock rear end...

I just can't decide.

Found a 07 GT/CS 5 speed with 58k for $9500

01 cobra with 132k for $6900

Can't find any mach 1s

No Saleens under $10k

Obviously found a ton of ls1, I've rode in a few and they are very fast stock.

---------- Post added at 03:01 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:59 PM ----------

I also found a 02 GT with a vortech v2 with 93k miles for $10k

The 07 would be a screaming good deal if its in good shape and no issues. The 02 is worth more like $6-7k, the miles on the Cobra are too high.

Go test drive it, make them give you a carfax, if you have cash tell them you have cash and want it for $9k out the door and don't budge much if at all. That is a GREAT price for that year and mileage. Auto or stick btw?

Lucky man. I've owned 3 ls1 vehicles and have gone through 4 10-bolts. Finally i just pulled the trigger and got a Moser 12-bolt. Such a nasty car. LQ9 block built by Thunder Racing, with a fast 90/90 direct port 150 shot. I miss that car.. Haha.

As others have said, with that kind of money, you really cant beat an LS1 stock for stock. Im a huge fan of both ford and GM, and although i give the Coyote props over the new camaros (hence why i bought one), the ls1s rule the 2 and 3v fords.

Plus im a hugr nitrous fan, and LS1s LOOOOOVE spray.

All true! I'd honestly say, if you can get a nice cobra or Mach I , you'll be way happier than in camaro / trans am. Otherwise, go ls1. They are nasty fast, sound loud and throaty and t tops are pretty cool . I'd be in the same shoes if I had the same amount of money to spend for some new muscle. I like the new edges better than 98+ f bodies. But unless it's got a 4v, it can't really compete with the ls1 in stock form. Plus, the the f body will respond ridiculously well to mods. Also, camming is a simple job and pretty cheap. (Only 1 cam to change versus 4). Man l now you guys are making me want a TA

Can't go wrong with that

Pretty much. Cam swaps are cake.. I did my FIRST cam swap in about 12 hrs. Thats replacing the springs, pushrods, retainers, etc, as well as a ported oil pump. Have done maybe another 6-10 cam swaps in ls1s since then, and could easily have it done in a day. Here's a pic of my latest one. That i sold for my 6.0 GTO, which i traded in for the Coyote.

Fully built LQ9 block, 150 shot, 12-bolt with 4.33s, Viper spec T-56 trans Spec stage 4+ clutch and ls2 flywheel. God i miss that car lol.

Absolutely gorgeous! I love how low to the ground they sit! The only thing I'm not huge about is the weird low sitting position, but in a weird way , it kind of gives the car it's own vibe and feel. It's unique . Anyways, sick wheels man. Though, I bet the coyote gives you all kinds of fun now too . It still takes time to swallow that pill. 302 inches of american steel pumping out 420 hp... Bone stock lol

What would be too many miles on a mach 1 or cobra? I'm finding quite a few machs on autotrader for under $10k but have over 100k miles. They look super clean as well

4.6's are pretty solid engines. I wouldn't be worried to spend under 10 on a Mach with over 100k. That's me though.

It dynod at 502whp 492wtq on all motor, and 627whp 631wtq with the nitrous. This was a fairly miled LQ9 build too. With stock cubic inches. They can be taken up to a 427 and make well over 700 hp all motor.

This was also on a mustang dyno.

For 7k I'd buy that cobra. Start off with the right platform and put a new motor in it in a couple of years when it's closer to 200k. FWIW, I procharged a bone stock 4.6 @145k and the motor lasted until 212k when it threw a rod. A 4v motor would be even better off than that.
