Borla exhaust system

I recently purchased a 2012 mustang gt and noticed it has an aftermarket borla exhaust on it. It sounds great btw! But my question is how can I tell whether or not it was a catback system or just an axle back setup? Thanks

Look at your over the axle pipes and check to see if it has resonators on it. The resonators are a tell tale sign that it has just an axleback. Your passenger side resonator should also have a dent in it as they come from factory that way.

I know that there are still resonators on it but haven't seen any kind of dents that stood out to me but now that I know to look for them I'll double check. Thanks

Yeah it's not super noticeable but the stock resonators come with a dent lol. I'm not sure why though. If you remove the stock resonators and replace them with a straight pipe the exhaust will sound even better! And it's cheap

Will the car pass smog without the resonators ?? Or is that just sound reduction...

Nice I might have to try that....I swapped out my h pipe for a bbk x pipe after cat and I can feel a nice improvement on torque flow and mpg...highly recommended...

I felt this was my only option, since here in Jersey emissions is enforced. If it wasn't a big deal, I would have done the opposite... Keep resonators and add an off road H

Thanks a ton for the pictures! I'm almost positive now that its a catback exhaust since the resonators look pristine. I'm hoping to get a set of american racing headers with hiflo cats and x-pipe to complete the exhaust. I'm in virginia so I have to keep the cats =/

Post a pic so we can tell or not as it appears you may be a bit confused on what you have.

Alright I looked today and it looks like I have an axle back exhaust on mine. I don't have a lift of any kind so the pictures aren't that great but the resonator closest in the picture definitely has a dent in it. The first pictures posted more clearly show this but the only side note id like to make is that its the driver side resonator not the passenger.

You have the axle backs. You also have both resonators that are dented still in place. Dented on the bottom of the driver side and on top of the passenger side. They all come that way from the factory.

Thanks. Thats what I had determined after checking and taking that picture. My question is what can I do to turn the axle backs into catbacks? Nowhere have I seen where they sell cat to axle piping. So what is it that makes a catback system create more horsepower where the axle back doesn't?

You won't gain any power ditching the resonators or switching to a catback. Just a different sound. And there are several companies that make the over the axle pipes.

Yeah after making that post I happened to come across a cat to axle piping but I also spoke to an american muscle rep about what all I want to do and was told that it won't really make a difference if I do that piping or not. So save my money for headers, hi flow cats, and an x pipe!
