Auto Trans Glitch ?

I just got my new 2014 GT (AT, Brembo pkg) a week ago. It replaces my 2008, also with AT.

Here's my problem. When in Drive or Sport Mode, coming to a complete stop, then accelerating, I hear a click or clunk. It seems as though the trans disengages for a split second before 1st gear engages. If I wait a second before getting on the gas, there is no click.

On the other hand, if I use SelectShift to manually engage 1st gear a bit early before stopping there is no false "neutral", hence no click.

(FWIW, the car idles at 600 rpm, lower than my 4.6 AT did. Normal?)

Anyone have this symptom?

Best wishes,
Dave

symptom suggests an illness...I don't think there is a pathology here.

The multi piece driveshaft can make a few noises on this car. Manual trans cars get this worse, naturally.

Things are also tight and settling in on your brand new car. Give it a few hundred more miles and if you're still concerned, take it in.

This isn't a 4.6. The level of sophistication in the engine management makes that thing look carburetted by comparison. Idling at very low rpms is normal these days, as it helps meet emissions targets.

5LHO, thanks for your reply. I'm hoping it's not a mechanical problem, but strange noises in my new (& sophisticated) Mustang give me cause for concern.

Coincidently, I've ordered a similar set-up to yours: Ford Racing ProCal tuner, air cleaner, and GT500 mufflers.

I'm hoping the ProCal tune will "tighten up" the trans significantly.

Best wishes,
Dave

My V6 clunked like crazy when I first bought it. Now, with almost 4000 miles on it, it still clunks a little, but not nearly as dramatically.

The Procal makes no changes to the auto trans tuning. However, the additional low rpm torque and eased-off nannies will make the driving experience more pleasurable.

You can't totally escape the fact this is a stick axle car with an old-school driveline layout. Some noises are to be expected. The juice box will soak up most of it but not all.

It won't at all.

Unless the ProCal speeds up the lethargic shift speed of the stock auto trans, I won't be happy with it.

The SCT tuner on my 2008 GT firmed up the shifting dramatically. That car would chirp the tires on the first upshift no problem. Since your are drag racing your car, you're losing time on every shift.

Happy Holidays,
Dave

I have made the wrong choice for a tuner.

Well, depends on how fond of your warranty you are.

This is the dilemma of the auto. To really get something out of it, you have to go aftermarket. This and the fact BBP couldn't be had on an auto, there was no selectshift and the car came with soft rear gears when I bought mine sealed the deal against the auto.

The Procal actually works surprisingly well on an MT car (see my sig for evidence) as that is really what it was designed around. You'll see some good improvement with PC, even with the auto but the results will be muted somewhat by the juicebox.

Let me clarify my last remark:

Since the Ford Racing ProCal tuner doesn't improve on the slow shifting of the stock auto trans, it makes more sense to buy a tuner that corrects this deficiency.

The ProCal may work fine for the manual trans drivers.

So, I bought the wrong tuner for my auto trans GT. I should have done more research.

Dave

Dave,

Don't beat yourself up over the purchase of the ProCal. In the end you may like it. Not everyone spends their life on Mustang boards which is something we fail to remember at times.

I'm actually trying to get my parents to let me get the Procal and K&N air filter, they don't want engine warranty voided, I think they would be fine with reduced, since it's a VERY (too much) conservative tune. To me, the auto shifting isn't that slow.

It's not reduced. Nothing in the Procal docs say that the manufacturers powertrain warranty is changed by Procal install. The FRPP warranty replaces the b to b warranty on powertrain components.

Nobody's reported an engine blow in three years of people running the PC tune.

Oh, even better, I saw that FRPP had a 3 year warranty, so I assumed that it would affect the factory warranty, so if I installed the Procal FRPP tune, then I would still keep the full factory warranty? Including the b to b warranty?

Again, the FRPP warranty replaces the b2b on powertrain components. Nothing in the docs indicates anything else is affected.

Grabber,

I hear what you're saying. My previous 2008 GT was my DD & commuter to work. Now I'm retired and the new GT is more of a toy. From what I've read, the pro part of the ProCal is the fact it's set up for low end torque. Big torque always makes for an enjoyable street machine.

Happy Holidays,
Dave

It's the Driveshaft

I don't think you have any problem all auto owners will have once in a while. It is the stock driveshaft making that clunk. Harmless but annoying. (Slip type driveshaft)
