Gear Question

I have an automatic 2013 5.0 and want clarification on top end loss when going with shorter gears.

I understand if wanting to go from 3.15s to 3.31s, my top speed MPH will decrease, but I am wanting to know if my top end pulling power will fall flat faster.

I mean, if roll racing at the track, will I be faster to say 110 mph, and then fall flat in 4th gear compared to 3.15s?

How does one roll race at the track? And I'm not understanding what you're asking?

A lot of drag strips are starting to run roll races (assuming they have the space for guys to get up to speed) to try and get people off the streets.

OP a higher numerical gear lowers your top speed but, due to the torque multiplication of the gears, your car should pull harder up top and make the higher transmission gears more usable. Though jumping from 3.15 to 3.31 is not gonna be very noticeable

Thank you Mile High for that explanation.

The reason why I am not wanting to get too much lower than 3.15s is because, this vehicle is a daily driven car, that does see a lot of highway driving.

No problem, I wish I could be more help but most of my knowledge lies in the new edge cars unfortunately. Have you thought about 3.55s possibly?

I have thought about getting 3.55s, but I am not really sure about those as I do a lot of highway driving.

Wont be as bad as u think. I have a '14 with 3.73 and get an honest 24-25 mpg cruising at 70. 26 if 60 btw. Nothing "falls flat." It pulls very hard to redline. Just may have to grab an extra gear at the big end.

I drive my 3.73s every day, nothing falls off or runs flat... if there is a difference in top speed my guess is you won't see it until closer to 150 cause the car gets up to 130 in a blink and still pulling... I'm driving on the tollway and not a track so thats about as far as I will push it. Again, if there is a decrease in anything for going with lower gears, it really wont be noticable.

Totally agree... once I lower mine (after I get my wheels), my next task will be upgrading to 4.10's, but I gotta get wider tires in the back ASAP!
