HID project in full swing

Well, all these HID threads and replacing my no-name HID kit that came with the car with Halogens that were supposed to be great (but were meh) has got me spending money I probably shouldn't but this car is going to be a DD and I am not going to put myself or anyone in the car at risk because I can't see like I should.

At any rate, lighting and electronics are not my strongest suits so I've been lurking/googling/researching like crazy. What I have found is that the DDM kits are way too hit/miss and use cheap parts. Even the highly Amazon rated Kensun ones have known issues getting the bulbs right and I've heard from more than a few sources that their bulbs are the same damn ones as DDM/VVME/other cheap brands.

After a LOT of looking/research I settled on the Volt kit from Xenon Depot. This is one of the best kits you can get short of an OEM retrofit. They are a Canadian company too so no dealing with China. Its $109 till about an hour from now when the March sale ends and I also got $25 off for a forum code for $85 shipped to my door. The kit usually retails for $130. You get what you pay for.

They are going in these housings:

Hi-beams are going to start off with the stock 9005 bulbs that come with them but I will probably upgrade to Osram Night Breakers or Philips Xtremes at some point soon.

Really the only thing that has got me hung up is the fogs. I want them in the 3000k range for visibility. I am not going for some ricer "JDM" look, yellow light cuts through fog/rain better than any other color and it gets yoga balls foggy around here in the summer at night/early morning. My dilemma is to roll the dice with my shelved no-name ballasts and some 3000K HID bulbs or just do something like a super bright 2500k Halogen. If I do it'll be Nokya Hyper Yellow bulbs. So not sure which direction I am going but I've got Philips bulbs in there now so I don't have to decide right away.

Here is a before pic of my pile btw:

I guess nobody cares lol. Or I've pissed too many ppl off calling them out lately for putting HID kits into stock reflector housings and blinding oncoming traffic.

Anyway final combo for this biotch is...

-The DEPO housings
-Volt HID kit
-Philips 9011 (HIR1) halogens in the high beam
-Nokya 2500k Hyper Yellow Halogens in fogs

I've seen pics of how the DEPOs do as far as a HID beam and its really actually pretty good for an aftermarket projector. Definitely no scatter everywhere like a regular housing. Will do a review on them when I get them in.

Yes 6622 but they are not in yet. However...

DEPOs came in today. I am beyond happy with the quality of these and the projector is way bigger looking in person than it is in the pics. The wiring harness is great, they include a bunch of zip ties for keeping everything organized and also a DOT compliance card so if a cop pulls me over for the lights (no idea why but w/e) I have it there to show the headlights are approved and not some ebay ricer specials or HIDs illegally mounted in reflectors.

And for the hi-beams

And the thing that is going to make this all go

The quality of everything looks amazing, wires are all nice and flexible and it all comes packed in a vac formed container so nothing moves at all during shipping.

Can't wait to get these in, will try this weekend but probably going to have to wait till next. Blah.

Well after a few hours because I am anal retentive and go really slow the headlights are in, wiring harness is mostly ran and all I need to do is mount the ballasts and fire it up.

Tomorrow or whenever I will do the ballasts and then its just a matter of finding a good spot to mount the relays, zip tie up the harness, wire it to the fuse box and ground it to the two spots behind the driver's headlight.

Also had to do the 9011 to 9005 mod which is this

Lets you put the much brighter 9011 in a 9005 slot and all it takes is 2 seconds with a pair of wire cutters.

Hopefully I have some daylight left after my kid's birthday to finish up but probably not. She'll sit unfinished in the garage for another week since I am not driving it without functional headlights. Oh well, more driving the Expy to work.

Thanks. Project is stalled for the moment due to rain/work hours and also my wife apparently was not following instructions while bleeding the brakes when I did my calipers so I need to wait for my power bleeder to get here before I try to put the car on ramps to crawl under the nose and mount the ballasts/relays and zip tie the DEPO harness to the wiring harness of the car. Yay...

If this turns out well I may be doing a HID retrofit for the wife's CRV as well or seeing if they make projectors at least. Need to see how these HIR bulbs work too because my Expy uses a 9006/9005 combo which is PnP for those bulbs after a little plastic trimming on the tabs like the pic I posted shows.

It's kinda crazy that newer number is brighter than the 9005. That's a pretty damn bright bulb

A 9005 puts out around 1700 lumens. A 9011 HIR puts out 2300+ which is pretty drastic. And a "silverstar" or any other coated bulb actually puts out less lumens than stock but the light is whiter which makes people think they are brighter but they are not. Silverstars and all the gimmick bulbs are dimmer, burn out faster and cost more. Lose lose lose.

A is a silverstar 9005, B is a regular 9005 and C is a Philips 9011 HIR.

Yep and with the DEPOs being $110 shipped and preloaded with OEM Philips 9005/9006 bulbs already I have 0 idea why ppl would drop $100 on a set of 4 silverstars (fogs and headlights) to put in their reflector housings that are just going to burn out in 10 months anyway.

First impression upon walking around to see them was "whoah". These things have to be double bright from the chinese crap that was yanked out. This is in part to 4300k vs whatever K those were (probably 10k) before but also speaks to what a good ballast is going to do vs a cheap one. This is the best pic I have, I just finished a little while ago. I'm anal retentive about making sure everything is hidden as best as possible and wiring is all secured/zip tied.

I'll aim them tomorrow and then finally give this biotch a drive into work Monday morning. Actually also have to extend the foglight plug in the console in prep for my 01 console swap and do the Nokya Hypers in the fogs too.

VERY preliminary beam pics. My driveway is 25 ft long so I can't have the car sticking out into the road... Did some adjustments at 15 ft just to get them low enough so I'm not blinding anyone. Will drive over to an empty parking lot, pull up an inch away to a wall, put tape there, back up to 25 ft and then adjust away. I have the lisle adjustment tool for SN95/fox which makes adjusting these headlights a breeze.

Lo-beams outside car

Inside car:

HIR Hi-Beams:

Like I said needs a ton more adjustment but I haven't got much sleep this weekend and I won't next weekend either and I need to wake up in 10 hours so I had to just quickie this to make sure they are low enough not to blind anyone coming the other way. I'll see what they look like during the day at my Parents' house during lunch. They have a huge driveway so if I can see the beam on the garage tomorrow I can get them right.

$110 for the DEPOs, $85 on sale for the XenonDepot HID kit. You don't have to use HIR bulbs in the hi-beams honestly, 9005 bulbs are damn bright already at 1700 lumens but the HIRs crank it up to 2300 and I drive through the Pine Barrens at night... So $50 for the HIRs puts me around $250 give or take for the whole setup.

I can honestly say after having these DEPOs installed they look about as factory as you can get, like Ford did it. I know I bag on the Raxioms a lot but they really are rice lights and these look stock.

And also if you just want to see better without doing the HIDs you can just buy the DEPO lights and thats it. They come with genuine OEM Philips bulbs installed already so you can just wire up and go sticking with the halogens.

This is right on time. These stupid Raxiom crap housing are pitiful with the water that all of a sudden it's taking on. I figure going back to the stock lights which I'm glad I didn't sale and putting covers on with for that black out look with HIDs is my only option. Thanks for making my search for a good bang for my buck kit extremely easy

Wait what? If you are talking about putting HIDs in your stock reflector housings that is exactly the point of this thread is NOT to do. My headlights are projectors, not reflectors.

No, the Raxioms are unacceptable, OEMs are fine for the 11-14 cars IMO.

Yeah they fit like ****, the top rubber is super stiff and won't let them seat right. They are the same brand as the headlights but there is a little more... leeway with the headlights, the sidemarkers have to be spot on which I guess is why a lot of ppl stick with OEM. I am.
