Skipping gears doesn't save gas or short shifting. Shifting a little higher reduces effort on the engine saving gas too. If you're majority is city driving then it simple will not be better. You also may romp on it more than you think you do. MPG tests are done in normal driving, not aggressive driving.
Leaving the car in gear until the last possible second when braking/coming to a stop will add a little too.
