Performance chip suggestions?

Hey guys, I have a 98 v6 automatic. I know it's not an ideal mustang, that's why I'm not going to do to much. Probably just a chip, an air filter and an exhaust. I know everything I want besides the chip. I was wondering if anyone knew of a chip that adds a decent amount of HP but won't break the bank. Click image for larger version

Quick random question because I'm new. How do I change my information?

Bama chip is decent on AM's site. That's the only chips I know of that are any good.

There is no chip that is going to add any sort of noticeable power in a 98 V6. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm bagging on the V6 but the earlier ones were just horrible as far as power. The later 02-04s were a lot better and then obviously the new 2011-up V6 is ridiculous.

I would just do your plugs/wires/basic tune up and drive it.

Scotty is right, but if you are used to the power you have now, then the bama chip will help a little bit and make it a little more fun to drive. Just know you'll never make it a track car... Unless you never get embarrassed lol. Good luck.

Gears do more for you than a chip. If you just looking for more thrill out of it.

Then the only thing I would spend money on for it is gas and routine maintenance.

But for gears you need a tune. That why a chip/tuner is a good starting point

Get a speedcal if you don't feel like dropping $400 on a SCT tuner. They're cheap, they work, they are easy to install.

That may be true, but still doesn't mean that a tuner isn't a good starting mod, and will make the car a good bit more fun to drive. Plus it will help with other mods. Like I said, he is not going to be tracking this car... It will make it a little bit more enjoyable to drive.

Eh... to each their own. The Mustang is not the most DD friendly car in the world if you just go by interior/space and trunk space. The big ticket to make up for it is performance... which the V6 does not have until 2011. Which is why I have never owned a V6 Mustang (but I would own a 2011-up), I find them about as useful as tits on a bull. There are a ton of good DD sedans out there that will have the same or better performance as a 1998 V6 mustang plus you get interior room, trunk space and probably better mileage too. But if you like them for the looks and a V6 is all you can afford then to each their own. Its not my car and he can do anything he wants obviously (legally of course), I'm just trying to explain why I don't think the V6 is worth it at all without sounding like some tool who just comes in and goes "V6 lolololol" like an idiot.

Like I said, I would just drive it, put as little money into it as humanly possible and then get something much nicer when the time is right.

I would stick with an SCT hand held tuner, over a chip. If your Mustang is OBDII, and hand held tuner is much easier to use and have more features than a chip.

Power gains are very minimum for a 98 v6 Mustang with a tune. However, there are still gains. Even more so, the automatic shift points, pressure, and torque converter lock are much better with a custom tune than factory. A custom tune is worth it in the automatic shift points alone!

The more significant reason I think a Bama SCT hand held tuner would be a great mod for you is because it doesn't have to stay with your Mustang. When you take the next step and purchase a v8 manual, as mentioned earlier, you'll be able to set the v6 back to stock and purchase tunes for the v8 and use the same tuner. To me, that's what would really make a tuner worth it.

Let me know if I can help you with any other questions or concerns!

Shane

If you really are dead set on getting some pep then get gears.

If not then just suck it up and do the regular tune up stuff and bank that cash.

I even agree with Scott. I know it's not some super fast car. That's why I decided I'm not gonna make and performance mod. I think it's a waste of money. Just gonna wait until I have a good paying job and get a v8.
