I just upgraded to 3.73 in my 97 auto and it's a hell of a lot quicker. Half second 0-60 for me.

I got a 8.8 last month and debating on gears for a future mod.

new engine,1.7 rocker arms,Pipes exhaust, shorty cats , shorty headers,under drive and overdrive pulleys,4.2 upper plenum, throttle body spacer, cold air intake, stage one clutch, shorty shifter, and tune. 8.8 in storage

Note that with a V6, you will need to keep your speeds to no more than 100-110 mph due to the danger point for the stock driveshaft moving down from about 130mph to just under the limiter. Once you replace the driveshaft, though, you should be fine to remove the limiter and do all the drag strip runs you want to.
