I haven't tried any of the commercial kits but have had good luck using a Micro-Mesh finishing kit which has sandpaper that goes up to 12000 grit. I've used it on guitar lacquer finishes and it works great on plastic.

Four out of five dentists recommend Crest.

I used two different types of sand paper and wet sanded my head lights I used 1500 grit first going in one direction the whole time then used 2000 grit. After that I used Meguiars Scratch X2.0 car polish and polished the lights for awhile with a micro fiber towel and they came out clear as day and had a slight sparkle to them. All in all I took about 2 hours to do both of them. Click image for larger version
