4 Ways and Brake Lights 2013

I was attending a funeral for a friend yesterday, and had to use my 4 ways whiel we where in the persuasion. The person behind me was driving a 65 Mustang GT and said that with my 4 ways on when I hit the brakes my brakes lights didn't come on. I went to the dealer afterwords and found out only the third brake light will come on the two rear lights keep flashing. Is this the way it is on your car because it just doesn't seem safe to me.

The emergency flasher lights use the same circuit as the directional (turn signals). This circuit is also your brake lights, so yes, it's the normal operation. From the owners manual:

HAZARD FLASHER CONTROL
The hazard flasher control is located
on the center console next to the
gearshift lever. The hazard flashers
will operate when the ignition is in
any position or if the key is not in
the ignition.
Press the flasher control and all front and rear direction signals will flash.
Press the flasher control again to turn them off. Use it when your vehicle
is disabled and is creating a safety hazard for other motorists.
Note: With extended use, the flasher may run down your battery

It's just like when you use your turn signal with brakes applied. One tail light and the third brake light will come on while the other tail light will flash. It's normal operation of any vehicle that has turn signals incorporated into the same bulbs used for its brake lights.

OK I guess I am going to have to check this on my other car. I always thought when you hit the brakes the 4 ways stopped and the brakes lights just stayed on. I understand the turn signal working that way.

In fact the 2010 in front of me worked that way. His brakes lights would stay on the stop flashing while his foot was on the brake. So did the 65 GT

I understand how they work I was using them. I just didn't understand that they would keep flashing while I pressed on the brake I am pretty sure in my other cars the 4 ways stopped and the brakes lights like normal until you let off the brake. In fact the 2010 in front of me worked that way. His brakes lights would stay on the stop flashing while his foot was on the brake.
