Illegal in CA?

So I've heard it's not and it is illegal to remove the mufflers. What's the right answer I plan to remove the mufflers from my 13' mustang gt pretty much straight pipe from cat back. And also on a scale from 1-10 how loud is straight pipe?

You can google the exhaust laws. It's illegal to modify it at all if you want to get technical. 95DB is the loudest it can be. Guy on here got a fix it ticket in Ca for roush mufflers.

95db
Must have CARB legal cats
Must have Mufflers

Technically you can be under 95db but if you have no mufflers you still fail. Gotta meet all the requirements.

High flow cats aren't legal.

Here is how I figure out what is legal and what is illegal in California--

When presented with the question "is this illegal in California?" change the question to "is this something a free person would be allowed to do?"

If the answer is "yes, a free person could do this", then it is indeed illegal in cali. If it is "no", then it is also illegal in california.

Actually heres another way of figuring out what is illegal in california:
"Is it paying taxes, or going to work so I can pay taxes?". If you are not either paying taxes, or going to work so you can pay taxes, you are breaking Republic of California Federal Law

If I were you, I would get permission to leave california from your dear leader and try out life in america

I installed Borla touring mufflers on my car and actually got a complement from a cop on the sound. I dunno, maybe the tourings are under 95 db? I know he didn't measure them. There are a lot of cars and bikes around here that are way louder than my car. Illegal on the books for sure but doesn't seem heavily enforced. I suppose if you're driving like a dick, you might get busted for them along with whatever else you were doing.

Technically any exhaust modification is illegal in Washington too. I hear they use it mostly as an excuse to pull suspicious people over mainly

You can modify your exhaust in Cali. Its not 100% illegal. Just have to follow the other 3 things i listed before.

I haven't seen any. But they can get you based on judgement then you have to prove it's under 95db. Most don't care though. Cops seem to like domestic

I thought the king of california just passed a bill illegalizing the production of the brain chemicals: Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin, and Endorphins?

That is true. Import guys get way more heat from cops. I respect the cops for that and that alone lol. And the cops who view themselves like firefighters instead of paramilitary troups waging war on us citizens.

Ive never been given trouble about my loud V8 exhaust and I get pulled over way less in my mustang than I did in my volvo s60T5 or bmw. I even followed more laws when I was in those cars than I do in my mustang, really. Oh yeah, and I drove a lot less.

The only time I got pulled over in my mustang was the day after I did an engine replacement and carb conversion, I drove to work with no hood on, and no registration, and nothing on the exhaust besides manifolds. I had full coverage insurance though lol $10 ticket for something I dont even remember what

The laws in CA are actually pretty easy to get around. It's not as bad as people think.

You're living in a ****hole state. It's a shame because there are so many nice things to see there, but the rules there are for the birds.

Trying to understand how this fine could happen? It's unlikely a cop would pull you over and issue such a fine. A smog inspection station may fail your car, but that still leaves you the opportunity to "fix" the car and re-test it without a fine. Most smog inspection stations will even offer free re-testing.

If you fail the smog test you can't renew your registration and if one continues driving it with an expired registration (for any reason) that could definitely get you a fine.

Makes me think there's more to the story.

You'll be fine. Expect drone on the freeway though. I actually checked with three smog shops before doing my muffler delete, and all 3 said it's fine as long as u retain the cats. It is tuff living in cali at times, but nowhere else anywhere will u find our oceans, beaches, rivers, lakes, deserts and mountains
