Poor Mustang...But why would the airbags not have deployed?

As the title states --- and no, I am NOT interested in buying this wreck --- but it looks from the pictures of the interior that the airbags did not deploy?? How could that be in a frontal impact like this?

All depends on the Exact way it impacted!.. Sensors for the Airbags obviously where not "hit"!.. Small possibility of a malfunction to!..

The only thing I can figure is that the impact was across the front (sideways?), and did not impact the accelerometers for the airbags enough to trigger them?

Hard to believe that it "runs and drives" as in the description. In looking at the pics again, it looks like the impact might have been forward from the left front wheel, and it tore everything off toward the front?

Hadn't thought of that! You are probably right, as the side airbags at least would have gone off......

I always thought the ignition had to energized before any of the sensors would work. If this car was parked with the ignition off I don't think the airbags would have deployed.....IMHO
My wifes 2006 Avalon was hit while parked and knocked almost 75' back....the airbags never deployed. The car was 3 years old with less than 12k miles. They weren't going to total it except the impact was so hard it broke the motor mounts and transmission mounts off the block and transmission case...bought the car for $33k in 2006 and the insurance company gave us $27k for the car when they totaled it in 2009.

That cars not even hit that hard looks like a lot of bolt on stuff is all it needs. All the stuff they took off of it just bolts back on and the lower control arm looks like something caught the front of the wheel and just pulled it back and ripped the control arm away from the ball joint and bent the tie rod

Well, the insurance company totaled the car, so there must be significant damage in $$......enough not to fix it and return it to the road. Even all fixed, the car is forever going to have a "rebuilt total" registration.

It's because the parts to fix it plus labor is more then 75% of value. I take it you know nothing about rebuilding cars

You assume too much based off of a couple of pics!.. Nobody really knows the damage done to this car so you can't really say how much it would cost to fix!.. Not to mention the fact that most Insurance Company's will not insure a car with a "rebuilt/salvage" title, if it was not done by a certified shop/technician!.. I've already been down that road!..

Regarding Air Bags

If a vehicle is struck while its ignition is off, will the airbag deploy?
Depending upon the auto manufacturer, some Airbag units have an auxiliary power source that is connected to the diagnostic unit or a separate unit entirely. This allows for the Airbag to deploy if the battery is damaged during a collision.

Or they pulled the fuse to avoid the shrapnel.

I can tell lots by the pictures rebuilding these cars is what I do 6 days a week 9am-9pm it needs lots of bolt on stuff. Like I said last I'm saying on this. Never said how hard it may be to get it tagged just saying it just needs lots of bolt on parts.

Not to mention the airbags won't deploy unless someone/something is sitting in the actual seats of the car. Pretty sure they are designed now to sense that there is someone sitting in the car before deploying.

^ this.

newer cars (for a while now) have weight sensors. this is supposed to prevent accidental death BECAUSE of the airbags. for example, if a child is in the front seat, an airbag could do worse than good. I believe the same for like, some tiny 90 lb girl in the driver seat as well.

fun fact: my cousin sat in the passenger seat of my old car, and it kept engaging and disengaging the passenger air bag. (airbag off light) found out it was because she was right on the cutoff for minimum weight. She took it as a compliment.

Yeah, I remember from the whole GM ignition switch fiasco that part of the problem was that the airbags would *not* deploy if the switch shut off while someone was driving. Very dangerous.
