Grinding Noise From Gears

I have a 2004 GT 4.6 V8. The first few times I switch into 5th gear when the car is cold I get a grinding noise from the transmission. Any suggestions on what this could be?

Re: Grinding Noise From Gears

5th gear is weak on those transmissions~ just a sign of wear. My 01 v6 did it on a T-5 every now and then. Have you ever changed the transmission fluid? hmmm well you should. Will it help it? Nope probably not but it will help future wear a bit if the fluid is more fresh.

My suggestion is to take it into neutral let it sit for a sec then ease it in when its cold~

try pushing the clutch in.....just kidding, the syncros are probably starting to wear in 5th, change the fluisd and run some atf stabilizer and itll help.

TR3650 is KNOWN for this when the trans is cold - there is a TSB on the issue at Ford dealers I believe - not sure if 5th gear is specified, but I'm pretty sure its all related

I'd had mine rebuilt at 26k miles for this same problem into second/third and fifth when cold

Re: Grinding Noise From Gears

here is a cheap simple fix. change the trans oil put the atf stabillizer in it. and either A. get a remote start and start your car about 5 minutes before you need to leave or B. go out side and start your car 5 minutes before you need to leave. give it some time to worm up. i know this is off subject but by doing that you will increase the life of your engine, by letting it idle for 3 minutes it alows the oil in the engine to completely cover your pistons to reduce wear. compared to just turning it on a driving off.
